(S): Director of Transportation JOB SUMMARY
The Van Driver/Attendant supports the safe transportation of students to and from school both in and out of the district. By assisting with supervision, behavior support, and student needs while on the van and in the bus. The van driver has a dual role in that when they are not assigned as a van driver then they would be assigned to a bus fulfilling the duties of an Attendant position. When driving the van or on a bus this position helps ensure a safe, orderly, and supportive environment. REQUISITE EDUCATION AND SKILLS
High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Minimum of five (5) years of driving experience with a valid driver's license required. Must hold a valid Virginia Driver's License with the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must successfully pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical, drug and alcohol testing, and tuberculosis screening. Must meet all driving record requirements and maintain plus points on your DMV record, background investigation, CPR certification, and physical requirements mandated by Manassas Park City Schools and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations, including railroad-crossing procedures. Ability to take a course to achieve certification through DMV to drive a non-CDL bus. Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English; Spanish language proficiency is a plus. Ability to perform moderate lifting of 50 lbs, operate a wheelchair lift, and assist students in and out of the van and bus as needed. Kindness, patience and understanding when working with children. Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in emergency situations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, supervisor, co-workers, parents, and students. Willingness and ability to work split shifts daily such as but not limited to (6:00 a.m.-8:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.-4:30 p.m.) during the school year. ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
(including but not limited to the following) Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g., fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, mirrors, etc.) to ensure the vehicle is in safe operating condition.
This Includes filling out all documentation. Is responsible for the safe transportation of students by demonstrating full knowledge of defensive driving techniques and a complete understanding of the laws of the road. Maintaining the van and assists the Bus Driver in maintaining cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and appropriate appearance of the bus and van exterior and interior. Transports passengers over scheduled routes to and from school and/or field trips in a safe and timely manner. Monitors students and other passengers during transit to maintain safety and ensure compliance with district policies. Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents, and/or potential emergency situations (e.g., road hazards, medical emergencies, accidents, etc.) and resolves the situation and/or recommends appropriate resolutions. Supports and participates in emergency evacuation drills in compliance with mandated safety requirements. Communicates with parents, teachers, bus drivers, supervisor, and administrators regarding student behavior, activities, or special transportation arrangements. Implements components of student behavior plans as directed, particularly for students receiving special education services. Reinforces bus and van safety rules and expectations while providing positive discipline and guidance. Operates wheelchair lifts and safely secures or repositions students and equipment as necessary. Maintains emergency and student information to ensure accessibility when needed. Responds appropriately to emergency situations and addresses immediate safety concerns. Protect students' information under the confidentiality guidelines. De-escalates behavioral situations to prevent distractions while driving that ensure student safety. Prepares and maintains written documentation such as behavior reports, medication logs, referrals, and route information. Lifts, students and/or equipment (e.g., wheelchairs, car seats, restraints, seat belts, etc.) to position or reposition students as appropriate Performs other duties as assigned to support safe and efficient transportation operations. Attends meetings, classroom training, behind-the-wheel training, safety meetings, in-service sessions, conferences, etc., to maintain skills and meet school bus driver certification requirements. Assists children with disabilities in and out of the van and on and off the bus as necessary. Assists with snow removal on and around vans or buses to ensure buses maintain established schedules. Monitors road conditions and reports any safety concerns to the Director of Transportation or designee. Communicates via two-way radio with the Director of Transportation or designee, schools, and other bus drivers as required. Reports all bus accidents immediately to local law enforcement and the Director of Transportation or designee and assists students as needed. When assigned to daily, overnight, or weekend field trips, is responsible for directions to the destination, parking, bus safety while away from the site, and conducting oneself in a professional manner while representing the school system. Performs other duties as assigned. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee must be able to effectively communicate and interact with the supervisor, staff, students, families, and the public through verbal, written, and electronic means. Duties require the ability to see, read, hear, speak, handle, and feel objects and controls. Physical requirements include climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and performing repetitive motions. The employee must possess sufficient strength and agility to safely move, lift, and secure students in child safety restraint systems and to assist students with entering and exiting the van or bus during both routine operations and emergency situations. The driver/attendant must be able to perform required emergency evacuation procedures, including entering and exiting the school bus as necessary. The position also requires the ability to perform moderate lifting of 50 lbs, operate a wheelchair lift, and assist students in and out of the van and on and off the bus as needed. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, and peripheral vision, as well as the ability to adjust focus and distinguish colors. While performing the duties of this position, the employee may work near moving mechanical parts and be exposed to a variety of weather conditions, including wet, humid, hot, and cold environments. The employee may also be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, minor vibration, and noise levels that are typically moderate to loud. CLEARANCES
