Upholstery Technician - Sewing Operator Alstar Seating - 2.5 Clifton, NJ Job Details Full-time $18 - $26 an hour 2 hours ago Qualifications Automotive upholstery Industrial sewing machine Sewing machine Full Job Description Job Summary We are looking for a skilled, detail-oriented Industrial Sewing Machine Operator specializing in automotive upholstery. In this role, your primary focus will be operating heavy-duty walking foot machines to sew high-quality custom and restoration interiors. While your main home is behind the machine, you will work hand-in-hand with our assembly technicians to ensure that every pattern fits perfectly and every finished piece meets our strict standards for quality and craftsmanship.
Key Responsibilities Precision Sewing:
Primary responsibility is operating industrial walking foot sewing machines to stitch leather, vinyl, and heavy fabrics for automotive interiors (including custom seats, door panels, and headliners).
Pattern Replication:
Deconstruct original covers, accurately trace/pattern, cut materials, and sew exact or upgraded replicas.
Team Collaboration:
Partner closely with assembly technicians to ensure sewn covers align perfectly with foam structures, frames, and installation requirements.
Quality Control:
Maintain focus on straight lines, topstitching, correct seam allowances, and overall durability of the end product.
Machine Care:
Perform routine daily maintenance on industrial sewing machines (threading, oiling, tension adjustment, and needle changes).
Experience & Qualifications Proven Experience:
Demonstrated expertise operating industrial sewing machines, specifically within an automotive upholstery or heavy-material manufacturing environment.
Technical Skill:
Strong knowledge of automotive patterning, material layout, and sewing techniques (such as French seams and topstitching).
Material Familiarity:
Comfortable handling and transitioning between various materials, including automotive-grade leathers, vinyl mixes, and heavy carpets.
Detail-Driven:
An eye for symmetry and perfection; a bad stitch doesn't leave your station.
Team Player:
Excellent communication skills and a collaborative attitude to work efficiently alongside our tear-down and assembly team. For those with strong sewing skills , we are willing to train in automotive interior work. This includes sewing, if no prior automotive experience, or other upholstery work.
Pay:
$18.00 - $26.00 per hour
Experience:
Industrial sewing machine: 2 years (Preferred)
