Job Title:
Utility Locator Job Description The Utility Locator supports field surveying and subsurface utility engineering activities by assisting with utility designation, test hole documentation, and restoration of work areas. This role involves working closely with a Party Chief, Testhole Foreman, Designator, and Field Coordinator to ensure that utility locating tasks are completed safely, accurately, and in accordance with contract documents and jurisdictional standards. The position offers an excellent opportunity for someone who is eager to learn, gain field experience in utility locating and surveying, and contribute to high‑quality data collection on major infrastructure projects. Responsibilities Assist the designator by carrying and setting up locating equipment at the job site and returning it safely at the end of the day. Support the testhole foreman by taking clear, accurate photos of measure downs, utility sizes, and pavement thicknesses for each test hole. Assist in performing levels to the top of exposed utilities prior to backfilling and complete level notes accurately and legibly. Backfill excavated test holes, compact the material properly, and patch the pavement or surface to meet project and jurisdictional standards. Clean and restore work areas daily before leaving the job site, ensuring a neat and safe environment. Follow directions from the Party Chief and field leadership to carry out utility designation and location tasks (QL-A and QL-B) safely and effectively. Help ensure that project data is collected, recorded, and downloaded in accordance with contract documents, applicable jurisdictional standards, and internal quality control protocols. Work collaboratively with the Party Chief to perform survey-related tasks and support overall field operations. Apply basic mathematical calculations in the field to support measurements, levels, and documentation. Adhere to all safety procedures and company policies while working around underground utilities and active construction or transportation environments. Essential Skills Willingness to learn utility locating and surveying methods and follow direction from the Party Chief and field leadership. Strong focus on the quality and accuracy of data collected in the field. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations to support measurements and level notes. At least 3 years of field experience in utility locating. Experience working with underground utilities in a field environment. Ability to perform general labor tasks such as lifting equipment, backfilling, compacting, and site cleanup. Capability to work 100% in the field in varying outdoor conditions. Strong attention to safety when working around underground utilities and on active job sites. Additional Skills & Qualifications High interest in surveying and willingness to move between utility locating and surveying tasks as needed. Experience with utility locating equipment and location services tools. Familiarity with location mapping software. Experience operating or working with a vacuum (Vac) truck is beneficial. Experience with GPS equipment in a utility or survey setting. Experience with a total station is preferred but not required. Experience with AutoCAD is preferred but not required. Interest in the utility industry and infrastructure projects. Overtime is not required, but the opportunity to work additional hours is available when work volume allows. Work Environment This role is 100% field-based and involves working outdoors on active utility and infrastructure projects, including major highway and transportation assignments. The Utility Locator works under the direction of a Party Chief, Testhole Foreman, Designator, Field Coordinator, and Project Management to complete survey and utility designation tasks in accordance with contract documents and internal policies. The work environment includes the use of utility locating equipment, GPS, location mapping software, survey instruments such as total stations, and potentially vacuum (Vac) trucks for test holes. Field conditions may involve varying weather, uneven terrain, and proximity to roadways or construction activities. The organization maintains a stable backlog of work and a strong presence in the market, providing long-term project opportunities and the ability to take on overtime when available and desired. Dress is typical for field construction and survey work, with appropriate safety gear and protective equipment required in accordance with company policies and site safety standards. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $32.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
