This includes water mains, sanitary sewer lines, storm drainage systems, and conduit installations. The Superintendent manages field crews, coordinates subcontractors, ensures strict adherence to civil engineering specifications, and maintains an uncompromising focus on OSHA safety compliance and project profitability. Key Responsibilities1.
Field Management & Execution Daily Operations:
Oversee day-to-day operations of wet utility crews, including equipment operators, pipelayers, and laborers.Scheduling:
Plan, sequence, and schedule daily production activities to meet strict project milestones and coordinate seamlessly with clearing, grading, and paving phases.Blueprint Reading:
Interpret civil engineering blueprints, grading plans, profile sheets, and CAD shop drawings to ensure accurate line and grade installation.Quality Control:
Ensure all pipe installations meet local municipal codes, NCDOT specifications, and utility provider regulations. Oversee pre-testing protocols (e.g., pressure testing, chlorination, mandrel testing, and video inspections). 2.Resource & Materials Coordination Material Management:
Track inventory of on-site utility materials (e.g., PVC, DIP, RCP pipes, manholes, valves, stone bedding). Verify deliveries against purchase orders to avoid field delays.Equipment Allocation:
Manage heavy equipment usage (excavators, loaders, trench boxes) effectively to maximize efficiency and minimize idle time or rental overages.Subcontractor Management:
Direct and monitor specialized subcontractors (e.g., utility locating, boring, asphalt patching, concrete aprons). 3.Safety, Compliance, & Risk Management OSHA Compliance:
Enforce strict OSHA guidelines regarding excavation, trench safety, sloping, benching, and shoring systems.Trench Safety:
Act as the designated "Competent Person" on-site for excavation safety reviews.Damage Prevention:
Coordinate daily with NC 811 and utility locating services to safeguard existing underground infrastructure prior to excavation.Erosion Control:
Maintain site compliance with environmental and sedimentation control plans (such as silt fences and inlet protection) surrounding utility paths. 4.Project Tracking & Reporting Daily Logs:
Complete accurate daily field reports detailing progress, crew hours, equipment utilized, and unexpected site conditions using project tracking software.Change Orders:
Identify out-of-scope field conditions (such as undocumented rock excavation or utility conflicts) and communicate them immediately to the Project Manager to facilitate formal change orders.Qualifications & Requirements Experience:
Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in heavy civil construction, with at least 3 years directly supervising underground utility crews (water, sewer, storm).Technical Knowledge:
Deep expertise in pipe-laying techniques, trench safety, laser alignment setups, dewatering methods, and subgrade soil compaction. Certifications (Required or Preferred): OSHA 30-Hour Certification. Competent Person Certification for Trenching and Excavation. NC Confined Space Entry Certification. Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record.Job Type:
