Veterans Advocate SALARY:
$20.34 to $22.40 hr, DOE
REPORTS TO
Veterans Advisor
LOCATION
Nespelem, WA Basic Functions:
The overall responsibilities include conducting outreach activities, greeting and screening Veterans seeking services, conducting program eligibility and assessment, identifying community resources, providing information and referral services, providing advocacy and program record keeping. Incumbent of this position must be an honorable discharged veteran.
Education and Training:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent Prefer 24 months experience working with veterans and veteran resources. Incumbent of this position must be an honorable discharged veteran
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires a basic knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment including receptionist and telephone techniques and etiquette. Requires basic knowledge and understanding of methods and procedures used in alpha-numeric filing and record keeping. Requires basic knowledge of data entry techniques. Requires a working knowledge in the use of common personal computer-based office software, spreadsheets and internet. Requires sufficient knowledge of English language, grammar, spelling, and punctuation to prepare routine correspondence and internal memorandum. Requires sufficient human relations skills to greet and work cooperatively with others, inside and outside the department. Requires knowledge of outreach methods, interviewing and assessment techniques, provision of emergency services and referrals. Requires knowledge of a broad range of social service and assistance providers in the target area. Requires knowledge and commitment to advocate for Veterans' needs. Requires basic understanding of Veterans services/Veterans Administration. Requires the ability to perform the duties of the position under general supervision. Requires the ability to learn, understand and apply Tribal rules, policies, procedures, and terminology used in the organization. Requires the ability to use a personal computer for data entry, work processing, spreadsheets, information searches, and email. Requires the ability to operate standard office equipment. Requires the ability to maintain records, files, and compile routine information used for reports on pre-determined formats. Requires the ability to communicate and maintain productive and positive working relationships with peers, other staff, and the public in a manner reflecting positively on the department and Colville Tribe. Requires the ability to communicate with Veterans on a daily basis with compassion and understanding. Requires ability to read road maps and find locations with just an address. Requires ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Requires compassion and empathy skills. Requires ability to be comfortable with reaching out to the wider community. Requires organization and attention to detail skills. Requires ability to follow through with assigned duties. Requires strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Requires ability to multi-task, problem solve and work in a team. Requires willingness to accept feedback and adapt accordingly. Requires flexibility and ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Requires participation as a Colville Tribal Veteran's Program team player by attending staff meetings and other organizational events and willingness to share knowledge to advance knowledge and skills of others. Requires the understanding and agreement to follow all policies, procedures & protocols as required. Requires ability of work as a member of a team and to work effectively with other community agencies in the best interest of the participant and the agency. Requires ability to function indoors engaged in work of primarily in active nature. Requires the ability to use near vision to write and to read printed materials and computer screens. Requires hearing and speech for ordinary and telephonic conversation and to hear sound prompts from equipment. Requires ambulatory ability to sit, often for long periods of time, move about Tribal locations, outside agencies, and to reach work materials. Requires manual and finger dexterity to type/keyboard at an acceptable rate and/or operate mouse and/or otherwise operate a microcomputer and other equipment. Requires ability to work non-standard hours including weekends and holidays. Requires ability to drive in adverse weather conditions. Requires ability to operate routes efficiently to ensure that the scheduled appointments are completed and must be able to manage time well.
Note:
Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.

In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
