Water Treatment Plant Operator

Job Summary The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform semi-skilled mechanical and technical work required for the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants and pump stations. Duties include helping ensure delivery of sufficient quantities of water to satisfy customer needs while meeting or exceeding all state and federal water quality standards and assisting in monitoring all plants and related appurtenances to ensure that they are being operated in accordance with established procedures. Examples of Duties Operates and maintains equipment; standardizes instruments, pumps, valves, meters, and other apparatus. Observes condition of raw and finished water and makes appropriate adjustments of chemical feed to maintain compliance with regulatory standards. Makes daily inspection of mechanical and electrical operating conditions of equipment and records findings. Performs general maintenance, records actions taken, and reports considerations to Superintendent. Takes samples as required by Superintendent Updates log of plant and system operations. Cooperates with other Public Works personnel and maintains good inter-departmental relationships. Completes special projects assigned by the Superintendent. Evaluates problems and carries out appropriate corrective actions after consultation with supervising personnel. Evaluates filter performance and initiates backwash procedures when necessary. Monitors performance of reservoirs/tanks and pump stations. Performs interpretation and evaluation of analytical data. Handles chemicals (coagulants, chlorine, caustic, citric acid, etc.) according to prescribed standards. This includes loading, maintenance of proper feed rates, and knowledge of proper handling of spills. Investigates customer complaints at Superintendents request. Performs general maintenance of buildings and grounds (mowing, weed control, tree removal, snow removal, janitorial, painting, etc.). Cleans facilities and operation equipment as required by daily visual inspection. Maintains working knowledge of plant computer monitoring and operating system. Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City Policies, Procedures, and safety practices. Performs other duties, tasks, or assignments as directed by the Superintendent or Public Works Director. Licenses and Certification Required Possession of valid Idaho or Oregon Driver License with a satisfactory driving record to maintain insurability. Preference may be given for possession of Commercial Class B or higher. Possession of Idaho DOPL Drinking Water Treatment Operator DWT-1 upon hire. Possession of Idaho DOPL Drinking Water Distribution Operator DWD-1 upon hire. Other Requirements Graduation from high school or equivalent.
