Job Description
Plan, direct and review the activities of the Public Works and Public Utilities Departments, including engineering, water/wastewater, infrastructure inspections, traffic operations and street maintenance; coordinates assigned activities with other City departments and outside agencies. Responsible for planning, organizing, directing and coordinating the activities of the several divisions comprising the Public Works and Public Utilities Departments. The Public Works Director is responsible for determining major departmental policies, for planning long-term programs and for making difficult technical decisions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must possess basic knowledge of applicable codes, ordinances and regulations regarding public works. Must possess the skills to communicate in writing and orally, must be capable of making reports and oral presentations; must have the ability to maintain working relationships and communicate with the public, City employees, City administration and elected officials; ability to deal with the public in a safe and friendly manner; knowledge of computer, electrical, water and mechanical operations related to Public Works; knowledge of the proper and safe use, application and maintenance of heavy and light equipment. Possession of a valid driver s license, in good standing is required. Ability to work in extreme cold, heat and temperature swings; Ability to work with exposure to dust and fumes. Ability to walk, carry, climb, kneel, sit, squat (in awkward positions), and stand for extended periods of time.Experience and Education:
Must be knowledgeable of applicable Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations. Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above required knowledge, skills and abilities is an acceptable substitute. Must have a minimum of 5 years experience in water/wastewater operations, 3 years of which is in a supervisory role.License and Certificates:
Must possess a high school diploma. Must hold a minimum of a Class B/C water License as issued by TCEQ. Must hold a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Class B/C as issued by the TCEQ. Physical Demands of thePosition:

While performing the duties of Director of Public Works, the employee works both indoors, sometimes in an office environment, and outdoors, often in inclement weather conditions, including but not limited to rainy, wet, humid, snow, ice, cold and hot weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, in high and precarious locations, exposed to exposed to fumes or airborne particles; occasionally exposed to toxic, caustic or carcinogenic chemicals; exposes to extreme cold, extreme heat, loud noise vibrations, and may be exposed to aquatic hazards.Other Requirements:
Employee must be willing to live within a 30-minute response time area. Employee is required to have a telephone at his/her residence for emergency availability, and may be required to respond to an emergency on a 24-hour per day basis. Employee may also be required to carry a cellular telephone furnished by the City. Additionally, employee is expected to respond as soon as possible to non-emergency calls from the Mayor or other City representatives unless procedures state otherwise.Similar remote jobs
