Job Description

Cargo Tank Welder / Mechanic This is a hands-on, skilled role focused on repairing and inspecting cargo tanks, various truck body installs, and/or repairs on truck and trailers (specifically DOT 406 and MC 306 types). You'll be working directly under the Service Manager and contributing to a well-established operation in Healdsburg's wine country.
Core Responsibilities Tank and Trailer Repairs & Inspections :
Perform VKIP inspections, welded repairs, and pressure tests per DOT regulations. Perform comprehensive trailer repairs including axle replacement, electrical wiring diagnostics and rewiring, frame straightening, and structural reinforcement. Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues across various trailer types and implement effective solutions to restore full functionality. Utilize welding, fabrication, and mechanical skills to repair damaged components and ensure DOT compliance. Collaborate with service managers to assess repair needs and prioritize tasks for efficient workflow. Fabrication & Welding Utilize acetylene and electrical welding equipment to cut, weld, and fabricate components from ferrous and non-ferrous metals in compliance with cargo tank regulations. Apply advanced welding and mechanical skills to install and integrate truck bodies, hook lifts, pump systems, power take-offs (PTOs), and other specialized accessories. Interpret blueprints and technical drawings to ensure precise fabrication and installation. Perform structural modifications and reinforcements to accommodate custom equipment configurations. Conduct post-installation inspections and pressure tests to verify integrity and compliance. Documentation & Communication • Maintain timecards, requisition parts, and report additional repair needs.
Shop Maintenance :
• Keep work areas clean and organized, return tools to proper storage, and follow safety protocols. Qualifications High school diploma or GED (required) Minimum 3 years of cargo tank repair experience Basic literacy and numeracy skills Physical & Work Requirements Ability to lift up to 75 lbs Frequent bending, crawling, climbing, and standing Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends Exposure to mechanical parts, odors, and airborne particles About Opperman & Son Located on an 8-acre facility in Healdsburg, Opperman & Son is a family-owned business since 1964 , specializing in heavy-duty truck and trailer sales, parts, and service. They're an "R"-stamp DOT tank repair/inspection facility , which means they're certified to handle regulated fuel tanks and trailers.
