Job Description

Position Overview:
Under the direction of the Tool Pusher, the Rig Operator is responsible to work the controls and equipment on a rig. The Rig Operator supervises and directs crewmembers including lining out daily tasks and responsibilities to maintain productivity and operational standards. This role also requires close coordination with customer representatives to deliver safe, reliable and high-quality service.
Supervision Duties:
Directly supervises crew of 3-6 employees.
Summary of Duties:
(Duties may include, but are not limited to the following) Core Rig Operations Operate rig equipment safely during rig up/down and pulling operations. Operate and monitor the crown saver and ground saver systems. Pull and lay down rods, tubing, casing and other equipment as needed. Arrange rods and tubing in the derrick correctly according to job steps. Operate rig components including the power swivel, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems. Perform Blowout Preventer (BOP) inspection, testing, nippling up/down and installation as required. Conduct pipe tallying, rigging up/down activities and general pipe handling. Accurately perform torque calculations and apply specifications. Equipment Inspections & Maintenance Inspect and verify functionality of rig brake systems. Perform daily inspections of workover rig, mud pump, fall arrest systems, derrick, hoisting components and other rig equipment. Troubleshoot and identify maintenance issues, including worn equipment recognition. Submit maintenance requests and ensure repair/replacement of equipment when required. Perform day-to-day lubrication, adjustments and housekeeping of rig tools and equipment. Ensure worksite, equipment, and tools are kept clean and in safe working order. Safety & Compliance Promote the RES (Responsibility, Empowerment, Safety) concept of Stop Work Accountability. Consistently enforce company safety policies, procedures and hazard ID programs. Lead Job Safety Analyses (JSA), Daily Work Plans (DWP) and tailgate meetings. Perform meet and greets at job sites and coordinate simultaneous operations with vendors and contractors. Ensure compliance with HSE, DOT and other applicable regulatory requirements. Stop work immediately if unsafe conditions exist and report concerns/incidents according to procedures. Actively participate in proactive reporting programs and incident investigations. Crew Leadership & Training Line out daily tasks and responsibilities for floorhands and derrickhands. Train and mentor crewmembers on safe use of rig equipment, pumping systems and safety gear. Provide guidance on hazard recognition and proper reporting. Support development of crew skills and ensure adherence to company standards. Administrative and Additional Duties Complete field tickets accurately and submit for processing in a timely manner. Assist with documentation and compliance reporting for HSE, DOT and other departments. Ensure accurate recordkeeping of inspections, hazard reports and maintenance requests. Safely operate company vehicles, including crew trucks, to transport personnel and equipment. When field or rig work is unavailable, assist with shop duties such as cleaning, organizing and equipment maintenance.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate using basic oral and written communication.
  • Ability to work with a team.
Basic ability to identify hazards and perform Behavior-Based Safety Observations. Ability to understand the role of a derrick hand during loss of well control events. Basic knowledge of MS Office preferred. Proficiency in KPA preferred.
Working Conditions:
Ability to work outside in various and extreme weather conditions. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and bend to access equipment, rigs and vehicles. Ability to stand, walk or sit for extended periods of time. Exposure to chemicals, oils, grease, dust, fuel fumes or other irritants. Exposure to loud noise. Must be able to lift 75 lbs. repeatedly and handle physically demanding work. Must be able to work at heights of greater than 50+ feet.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Valid Driver's License required, Commercial Driver License Preferred. 5 years experience working on a well servicing rig preferred. 2 years of experience as a relief operator required. Must be able to successfully perform the duties of a floorhand and derrickhand. Must be familiar with pump and tank operations.
