DPW WWTP LABORER - FULL TIME

The Town of Belchertown is accepting applications for a full time, 40 hours per week, Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Laborer to perform manual work assisting in the operation and maintenance of the municipal wastewater treatment plant and collection system; all other related work as required.

Major duties include:

. Repairs and maintains facility machinery, assists with electrical work, and other equipment as required, responsible for preventative and corrective maintenance of all plant equipment. Cleans intake grates hourly; cleans aeration fins daily; cleans and maintains return pumps daily; maintains and cleans sewer lines. Performs daily wastewater tests, under supervision of an Operator. Performs maintenance and repair tasks on buildings, structures, and grounds including laboring and custodial tasks such as painting, cutting grass, and cleaning floors. Responsible for the proper operation of sequencing batch reactors, mechanical filters, blowers, pumps, ultraviolet disinfection, chemical feed systems, sludge thickeners and clarifiers. Provides support for hired sub-contractors performing maintenance. May be assigned to other town departments or divisions, such as Highway and Buildings & Grounds, to assist in a range of maintenance work. Regular attendance and punctuality at the workplace is required.

Minimum qualifications:

. High school education; experience in the maintenance and repair of equipment preferred; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license. Basic knowledge of the principles and operating procedures of wastewater treatment and sanitary sewer systems. Basic mechanical aptitude. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Regularly lifts and/or moves objects weighing up to 75 pounds such as tools, equipment, supplies, etc. Must be able to work within confined areas such as manholes for sample testing and repairs. This is a Grade 3 IUOE Local 98 union position with a salary range of $19.27-$25.31/hour. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
