Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Youth Counselor is responsible for assessing the basic needs, barriers to academic success, and career aspirations of program participants. The Counselor will work collaboratively with the Youth Corps (YC) staff to help youth prepare for and secure jobs, improve academic outcomes, and develop workforce skills. This role includes providing individual and group counseling, coordinating life skills lessons (including financial literacy, career readiness, and soft skills), and supporting the implementation of work experiences, tutoring services, and community service projects. The Youth Counselor will also assist with the intake, enrollment, and transition processes to ensure smooth service delivery and help youth progress through the program successfully.GENERAL FUNCTIONS SUMMARY
Intake and Enrollment:
o Complete intake, recruitment, and enrollment processes for program participants, ensuring WIOA requirements are met. o Develop Individual Service Plans (ISS), Career/Education Plans, and establish required outcomes. o Assist with the transition process for Corpsmembers, minimizing disruption and ensuring continuity of services.Assessment and Counseling:
o Conduct individual assessments to identify strengths, barriers, and goals using various interviewing techniques. o Conduct biweekly counseling sessions and other required intervals, addressing progress, behavior issues, and barriers. o Provide interventions for risk factors that may lead to program dropouts (e.g., mental health, childcare). o Implement career/education plans to support self-sufficiency and positive post-program outcomes. o Provide psychoeducational tools to reinforce resilience and life projects, promoting personal growth and retention.Educational and Career Support:
o Implement Career Readiness and Life Skills curriculum, including workshops on: § Financial literacy, career readiness, interpersonal relations, and communication skills. § Decision-making, computer skills for career planning, and resume writing. § Labor market information and job search strategies. o Support work experience coordination, including identifying worksites, conducting visits, and preparing worksite agreements. o Coordinate volunteer-based tutoring programs to improve academic outcomes. o Develop educational plans that focus on academic improvement and career aspirations.Community and Employer Engagement:
o Establish and maintain relationships with external agencies, employers, and partners to benefit youth. o Pursue job openings, internships, and training opportunities for youth, linking them to job listings and career platforms. o Coordinate and support community service projects to help develop workforce skills. o Develop and maintain a monthly College and Career Board with relevant information for Corpsmembers.Record Keeping and Reporting:
o Maintain meticulous records and files on enrollment, case management, career counseling, attendance, academic progress, and placement. o Prepare reports according to DOL recordkeeping, documentation, confidentiality, and file procedures. o Ensure program participation requirements are met and track post-program placement.Program Participation and Collaboration:
o Attend staff meetings and collaborate with the team to address concerns, improve programs, and highlight successes. o Travel to schools, worksites, and other campuses as required. o Represent the organization at external events, meetings, and partnerships. o Provide support during weekends and evenings as needed.EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Education, or a related field.
- Minimum of two years' experience working with vulnerable youth or communities.
- Experience with workforce development and employment placement preferred.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and computer skills (MS Office required).
- Fluency in Spanish required.
- Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Ability to work harmoniously with supervisors, colleagues, and persons from diverse backgrounds.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Availability to communicate during working hours via Microsoft Outlook or TEAMS applications.
