Job Description

Hiring Department Kummer STEM Education Center Miners in the Making Afterschool Program Job Description The Youth Development Specialist supports the day-to-day work of the Miners in the Making Afterschool Program by supervising students, leading academic enrichment and helping the STEM activities, and making sure the learning environment is safe, positive, and welcoming. This role involves guiding students, helping them stay engaged, and building a sense of community and acceptance.

Key Responsibilities:
Academic and STEM Support Lead K-12 academic enrichment activities and assist our partner staff with hands-on STEM lessons Work with small groups or individual students to support learning goals Help students stay on task and adjust activities to meet their needs and skill levels Student Supervision and Support Supervise and mentor students during activities, transitions, and outdoor time Provide consistent guidance and support to help students stay safe and engaged Help create a welcoming classroom atmosphere where all students fee valued Follow established procedures to handle routine concerns and escalate complex issues to supervising staff Classroom Environment Guide and support staff in preparing materials, setting up activity stations, and completing cleanup tasks Maintain classroom structure, routines, and smooth transitions Help maintain a clean, organized, and inviting learning space each day Encourage positive student interactions and help reinforce program expectations Communication and Teamwork Share observations and student concerns with the Lead Teacher so needs can be addressed quickly Communicate with coworkers in a respectful, timely way to support smooth daily operations Participate in family engagement efforts by greeting parents, answering basic questions, or helping with events when needed Program Responsibilities Follow and help enforce all program policies, safety procedures, and classroom routines Support cultural unity and acceptance within the group Help keep the program running efficiently by completing assigned tasks and assisting teammates when needed Shift Monday-Friday, 3:00pm-6:00pm Minimum Qualifications An Associate's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and some experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary Preferred Qualifications Three years of experience working with school-age children in an educational or youth program setting Comfortable leading hands-on activities and small-group learning Strong communication skills and a positive approach to working with families and coworkers Flexibility, reliability, and the ability to adjust to changing program needs High energy and enthusiasm for helping kids learn and grow Able to complete professional development clock hour requirements Anticipated Hiring Range The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $18.00 hourly. Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements. Your total compensation goes beyond the number on your paycheck. The University of Missouri provides generous leave, health plans, and retirement contributions that add to your bottom line.
