Job Description

Youth Librarian, Edwards Public Library (Southampton)
The Youth Librarian is responsible for the development and implementation of a wide variety of children's and young adult programs from birth to teenage years, and providing patron services including reference, circulation, and reader's advisory. Responsibilities also include the performance of administrative and professional work associated with the planning, organization, and maintenance of the library's juvenile collection. The Youth Librarian functions as the Director in the absence of the Director. This is a part-time, 19 hour position including some evenings and Saturday coverage.
Plans, publicizes and implements children's programs, including story times, class visits, the Summer Reading Program and other outreach programs. Maintains statistics of activities and programs and prepares regular reports to the Director and Board of Trustees. Responsible for the library's children's and young adult collection as delegated by the Director and Board of Library Trustees. Handles disposition of outmoded materials and updates resources. Repairs and preserves materials and trains others to do so. Prepares and administers an operating budget for the Youth Department. Researches and applies for various funding and grant opportunities.
Responsible for the routine supervision of staff and volunteers in the Youth Department.
Assists children, families, teachers and other interested adults with readers' advisory, children's literature requests, providing professional recommendations of titles appropriate to children's reading and interest levels. Instructs patrons on the use of the library catalog and databases, computers, devices, equipment, tools, and resources. Assists patrons in locating materials in the collection.
Sets policies and procedures for the Youth Department, including short and long-term planning for the department. Protects the rights of patrons in accordance with the American Library Association Library Bill of Rights.
Plans and arranges promotional materials for library services, exhibits, and displays designed to stimulate reading and library use. Assists with the daily operation of the Library. Assumes responsibility for the Library and its staff in the Director's absence.
Performs other related job duties as required.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in liberal arts or a related field, Masters Degree in Library and Information Science preferred. Minimum of one (1) year in a library setting or a combination of education and experience working with children. Full/Part Time
