Contract / Part-Time (Seasonal) About the Role Starbound Theatre is seeking a Youth Theatre Production Director and/or Assistant Director to help lead engaging, inclusive, and high-quality theatre productions for children and teens. This role is ideal for theatre artists who are passionate about storytelling, mentorship, and creating meaningful artistic experiences for young performers. Directors and Assistant Directors work collaboratively with our creative team to guide students through the full rehearsal and production process—from auditions to final performance—while fostering confidence, teamwork, and a love of theatre. Key Responsibilities Production & Rehearsals Lead or support rehearsals for youth theatre productions Block scenes, develop character work, and guide storytelling Maintain a positive, organized, and age-appropriate rehearsal environment Support audition workshops and casting processes Collaborate with Music Directors, Choreographers, and Stage Managers Youth Engagement & Mentorship Create a safe, inclusive, and encouraging space for young performers Model professionalism, teamwork, and respect Support students with varying experience levels Reinforce confidence, responsibility, and collaboration Collaboration & Communication Work closely with the Artistic Director and production staff Communicate clearly with families, staff, and students as needed Follow rehearsal schedules, production timelines, and program policies Qualifications Experience directing, assistant directing, or teaching theatre Experience working with children and/or teens in an educational or performance setting Strong leadership, communication, and organization skills Ability to manage groups of youth with patience and positivity Passion for arts education and youth development Preferred (but not required): Musical theatre experience Background in education, youth programs, or camps Familiarity with JR/Youth Editions of shows Schedule & Commitment Rehearsals typically occur evenings and/or weekends Time commitment varies by production (6-12 weeks) Tech week and performances required Productions range from 2 weeks to 12 weeks for a production. This is seasonal work and does not provide set weekly hours.
