Description We are looking for a Collection Specialist to join a lean accounting team in El Cajon, California on a Contract basis. This role will focus on reducing overdue accounts receivable, resolving billing obstacles, and strengthening cash flow in a project-driven construction environment. The position works closely with internal stakeholders to address payment delays that stem from documentation gaps, invoicing issues, and process inefficiencies rather than customer disputes.

Responsibilities:

• Examine customer agreements and payment schedules to confirm billing accuracy and identify collection risks.
• Investigate overdue balances, uncover administrative or process-related causes of nonpayment, and drive issues to resolution.
• Lead collection efforts on aging accounts receivable, with particular attention to long-outstanding balances requiring detailed follow-up.
• Partner with accounting and service teams to remove payment barriers, correct invoice problems, and improve account status.
• Support efforts to reduce aged receivables and accelerate incoming cash through organized outreach and account review.
• Maintain clear documentation of collection activity, account status updates, and outstanding issues requiring escalation.
• Contribute to the preparation and organization of accounting records that support future system implementation activities.
• Coordinate with leadership and key internal contacts to prioritize receivable recovery across active projects. Requirements
• Prior experience in collections, accounts receivable, or credit and collections is required.
• Background in construction accounting or construction-focused receivables is strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with project-based billing structures and contract-driven payment terms is preferred.
• Experience reviewing invoices, payment conditions, and account discrepancies to support collections work.
• Proficiency with QuickBooks Desktop is preferred.
• Ability to manage a high volume of follow-up activity while working effectively in a lean team environment.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills with the ability to resolve non-customer-related payment roadblocks.
