Position Title:
Ambulance Billing Specialist
JOB SUMMARY
Clerical/bookkeeping work involving the billing and collection of ambulance accounts for the Fire District. Work is performed under the general direction of the Ambulance Billing Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Supports and carries out the Fire District's Mission Statement, and its goals and objectives.
  • Insures compliance with the Fire District Rules & Regulations, General Orders, and the Dress Code Policy.
  • Verifies information provided with run reports for the purpose of accurate billing of the charges associated with the transport.
  • Enters all patient data into computer in preparation of billing cycle.
  • Generates various bills/insurance claims and collection letters for mailing on a regular basis, including claims to secondary carriers.
  • Answer client telephone inquiries and accept payments in office ensuring that all actions are recorded in the client's file.
Enters:
retrieves, and updates accounts with address corrections and information received from hospitals or patients. (These essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed.)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of insurance procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical billing procedures.
  • Knowledge of diagnosis coding or medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of ICD coding
  • Knowledge of basic accounting.
  • Possess effective telephone communication skills.
  • Ability to accurately type and work a 10 key calculator at a prescribed rate of speed.
  • Ability to operate office machines.
  • Ability to make mathematical calculations with reasonable speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to make day-to-day operational decisions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Ability to work with a computer, and medical billing and word processing software.
  • Previous experience in medical billing services.
  • Exposure to medical terminology and/or procedure knowledge (EMT)
  • Experience on medical billing software.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION
  • High school diploma or acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in bookkeeping, ambulance billing, or customer service (experience may be cumulative across these areas).
  • AA/ AS degree in Accounting or a related field from an accredited community college preferred.
  • Valid Florida Driver's License. An equivalent combination of training, education, and experience may be considered to meet qualifications.) Please note there are forms that require notarization of the applicant's signature. Required at the time of applying:

  • Fair Credit Reporting Act - Witnessed (Available on the website).
  • DD214 (when asserting Veterans' Preference).
FDLE Fingerprinting and Background Check is Required Candidates must be able to successfully pass a criminal background screening, fingerprinting, and obtain Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Access Clearance as a condition of employment during the pre -employment process.
Work Hours:
  • This position follows a standard work schedule of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • The incumbent may be required to work occasional overtime, weekends, or holidays based on operational needs or special assignments.
EMERGENCY MANAGMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
During emergency conditions, all employees are considered emergency service workers. Employees may be required to report to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situations and are expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without correction).
  • Ability to access, input and retrieve information from a computer.
  • Ability to sit at a desk and view a display screen for extended time periods.
  • Ability to access file cabinets for filing and retrieval of data.
  • Light (under 15 pounds) lifting and carrying.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, calculators, photocopiers, filing cabinets and scanner/fax machines.
