Exhibitions and Collections Coordinator Type:
Part-time, up to 20 hours/week The New Orleans African American Museum (NOAAM) is seeking a Collections Assistant to support the day-to-day operations of the Research and Collections Department. The Collections Assistant will work closely with the Exhibitions and Collections Coordinator and Executive Director to support the care, documentation, organization, research, and accessibility of NOAAM's collections and archival materials. This position is well suited for a highly organized, detail-oriented, and dependable professional who is interested in museum collections and enjoys research, documentation, problem-solving, and maintaining organized systems. The successful candidate should be comfortable working independently, managing detailed information, and supporting multiple projects in a fast-paced museum environment. Previous professional experience in museums, archives, collections, or arts nonprofits is preferred but not required. Scope of Work Assist with the day-to-day management and organization of NOAAM's collections and archival materials Support the registration, cataloging, inventory, labeling, and documentation of collection objects and materials Enter, update, and maintain accurate digital collection records and databases Assist with researching collection objects, artists, donors, historical materials, and other relevant information Organize and maintain physical and digital collection files , ensuring materials are properly documented and accessible Assist with the preparation, organization, and tracking of materials for exhibitions, loans, research requests, and special collections projects Support the implementation and maintenance of collections management systems and organizational procedures Assist with identifying missing or incomplete collection information and conducting research to help strengthen existing records Help ensure that collections documentation is accurate, consistent, and up to date Assist with digitization, scanning, photography, and other documentation projects as needed Support collections-related administrative tasks, including spreadsheets, inventories, reports, and departmental tracking Attend weekly staff meetings and provide updates on Collections Department activities and projects Collaborate with NOAAM staff on exhibitions, research initiatives, educational programming, and other museum projects involving collections Support special projects and other Research and Collections Department priorities as assigned Qualifications & Requirements Educational background in Museum Studies, Art History, History, African American Studies, Arts Administration, Library Science, Archives, or a related field Previous experience in museum collections, archives, research, cultural institutions, or arts nonprofits is preferred Familiarity with collections documentation, cataloging, archival practices, or research methods is a plus Proficiency with Google Workspace, Excel, and video conferencing platforms Strong research, organizational, and administrative skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy Ability to maintain organized records and handle detailed information responsibly Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with a team Strong time-management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple assignments Professional, dependable, and proactive approach to work Demonstrated interest in African American history, art, culture, and the mission of NOAAM Application Instructions Interested candidates should submit a cover letter and résumé to with "Collections Assistant" in the subject line.
