Job Description

Join Our Ophthalmology Billing Team Eye Surgeons Associates is seeking an experienced Medical Billing Specialist to join our growing, multi-location ophthalmology practice. We are looking for a knowledgeable billing professional who understands the complexities of specialty medical billing and is confident managing claims from initial verification through final resolution. Ophthalmology or specialty medical billing experience is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and proactive with claim follow-up. You should be comfortable researching payer requirements, resolving denials, obtaining authorizations, and working accounts through to appropriate reimbursement. Key Responsibilities Prepare and submit accurate medical and surgical claims to commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and other payers. Verify insurance eligibility, benefits, and coverage requirements. Obtain and track prior authorizations for medications, procedures, testing, and surgical services. Review patient accounts for accurate demographics, insurance information, coding, and documentation. Calculate and document patient responsibility, including deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. Post and reconcile insurance and patient payments. Review EOBs and ERAs for accurate reimbursement and identify payment discrepancies. Work aging reports and proactively follow up on outstanding claims. Investigate claim denials and rejections, determine the cause, and submit corrected claims or appeals. Research payer policies and medical necessity requirements when resolving claims. Communicate with insurance carriers regarding claim status, authorizations, coverage, and reimbursement. Answer patient questions regarding insurance benefits, statements, balances, and costs of services. Establish payment arrangements when appropriate. Maintain thorough documentation of all billing and collection activity. Collaborate with physicians, clinical staff, front-office staff, and other billing team members to resolve billing and authorization issues. Ophthalmology Experience We Value Candidates with experience in the following areas are especially encouraged to apply: Ophthalmology or retina billing Medical and surgical ophthalmology claims CPT and ICD-10 coding Medicare and commercial insurance billing Prior authorizations Injectable medication authorization and billing Denial management and appeals Medical necessity and payer policy review Surgical billing and postoperative billing Accounts receivable and aging follow-up EOB/ERA review and payment posting Qualifications Previous medical billing experience required; ophthalmology experience strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 coding and medical terminology. Understanding of insurance reimbursement, payer guidelines, and claim processing. Experience researching and resolving denied, rejected, and underpaid claims. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Professional and compassionate communication with patients. Strong computer and data-entry skills. Ability to prioritize accounts and manage multiple responsibilities independently. Dependable, organized, and committed to following accounts through resolution. Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented medical practice.
