We are seeking an experienced and dependable Per Diem Mental Health Billing Specialist to provide billing support during periods of high volume, staff absences, and special projects. Position Summary The Per Diem Mental Health Billing Specialist is responsible for supporting the billing department by processing insurance claims, posting payments, resolving billing issues, and assisting with accounts receivable functions. This individual will ensure accurate and timely reimbursement while maintaining compliance with payer requirements and HIPAA regulations. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, experienced in behavioral health or medical billing, and able to work independently with minimal supervision. Essential Responsibilities Submit electronic and paper insurance claims accurately and timely. Post insurance and patient payments while reconciling Explanation of Benefits (EOBs). Review accounts for denials, rejections, underpayments, and unpaid claims. Correct and resubmit denied claims and prepare appeals when appropriate. Follow up with insurance companies regarding outstanding claims and payment discrepancies. Verify insurance eligibility, benefits, and authorization requirements as needed. Maintain accurate billing documentation within the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Assist with aging accounts receivable and prioritize high-balance outstanding claims. Process patient statements and assist with payment arrangements when requested. Review reimbursement trends and communicate recurring billing issues to leadership. Coordinate with clinicians, administrative staff, and insurance representatives to resolve billing concerns. Maintain confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and all applicable billing regulations. Assist with medical record requests when needed. Provide front desk support and administrative assistance during staffing shortages or high-volume periods. Qualifications High school diploma required; Associate's degree or Medical Billing Certification preferred. Minimum of 3 years of medical billing experience required. Behavioral health billing experience strongly preferred. Experience with payment posting, accounts receivable, denial management, and insurance reconciliation. Working knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and behavioral health billing requirements. Experience with insurance portals including Availity and major commercial insurance carriers. Experience with Tebra (formerly Kareo), eClinicalWorks (ECW), or similar EHR/billing platforms preferred. Knowledge of New Jersey Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial insurance billing preferred. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office. Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently while maintaining a high level of accuracy and productivity. Physical Requirements Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer. Ability to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds. Ability to communicate effectively with staff, patients, and insurance representatives.
