Job Description

Billing Specialist – Nonprofit Reimbursement (Medical Billing Background) Portland, OR Metro Area Hybrid – requires local Portland Metro area applicants About the Opportunity Our client is a mission-driven organization supporting community members through healthcare-related housing and utility assistance programs. They are seeking a Billing Specialist with medical billing experience to support billing, reimbursement, and reporting as these programs continue to grow. This is a unique opportunity to apply medical billing knowledge outside of traditional healthcare. The role will use healthcare billing platforms, coding requirements, and payer guidelines to submit claims for authorized housing and utility assistance. Key Responsibilities Enter and submit billing through healthcare platforms. Apply medical billing and coding knowledge to ensure accurate, complete claims. Review authorizations and supporting documentation before submission. Process billing for authorized rent and utility assistance, including multiple invoices and payment transactions. Work with case managers to resolve billing questions/discrepancies and identify missing or incorrect information. Coordinate with Accounts Receivable to support accurate reconciliation of billing and payments. Investigate discrepancies across billing platforms, invoices, payment records, and client documentation. Use Excel to organize, analyze, and reconcile billing data. Support reporting and tracking of submitted, outstanding, and paid invoices. Help develop and improve billing processes as the program grows. Maintain accurate records and protect confidential client information. Qualifications Medical billing experience with a solid understanding of billing requirements and coding. Strong attention to detail and accuracy when entering complex information. Experience working with billing or healthcare-related systems. Ability to review documentation, identify discrepancies, and follow issues through resolution. Intermediate Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, data analysis, and reconciliations. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities. Comfortable working across multiple systems and learning new technology. Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information professionally.
Preferred:
Experience with Epic or similar healthcare billing platforms; accounts receivable or billing reconciliation; healthcare payers or CCOs; nonprofit, healthcare, or social-services organizations; and Salesforce or similar CRM/database systems.
