Job Summary We are seeking a dedicated PRN Medical Billing Specialist with expertise in Behavioral Health to join our dynamic healthcare team. In this role, you will be responsible for accurately processing and managing medical billing and coding for behavioral health services, ensuring timely reimbursement and compliance with healthcare regulations. Your attention to detail, strong understanding of medical coding systems, and excellent customer service skills will contribute to the seamless operation of our billing department. This position offers flexible, remote scheduling (10-20 hours per week, as needed) to accommodate your availability while supporting our mission to deliver exceptional behavioral health care. Duties Review and interpret medical records, treatment notes, and documentation to assign appropriate ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases) and CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes for behavioral health services. Ensure accurate application of DRG (Diagnosis-Related Group) classifications when applicable for inpatient billing. Submit clean claims using billing software integrated with EMR (Electronic Medical Records) and EHR (Electronic Health Record) systems, adhering to healthcare claims management standards. Follow up on unpaid or rejected claims through medical collections processes, maintaining clear records of all communications. Verify insurance coverage, process payments, and resolve billing discrepancies while providing excellent customer service to patients and insurance providers. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of healthcare regulations, including ICD-9 (for historical data), ICD-10, and evolving medical coding standards. Collaborate with medical office staff to ensure accurate documentation and coding practices that support efficient billing workflows. Process claims for state Medicaid, Care Management Organizations (CMOs), and private payers. Requirements Proven experience in medical billing and coding within a behavioral health or mental health setting. Strong knowledge of ICD coding systems (ICD-9, ICD-10), CPT coding, DRG classifications, and healthcare claims management. Familiarity with medical terminology, medical records management, and medical coding principles specific to behavioral health. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) and experience with billing software, EMR/EHR systems used in healthcare environments. Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly with patients, insurance companies, and healthcare providers. Knowledge of health insurance policies, benefits verification processes, and medical collection procedures, including state and private payers. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining accuracy under deadlines.
