Full Job Description Position Summary:
The Benefits Coordinator Specialist is responsible for verifying insurance coverage and benefits, ensuring accurate eligibility, referrals, and authorization requirements for patients. This role serves as a key liaison between patients, providers, insurance carriers, and internal departments to ensure timely, accurate financial and insurance information prior to services being rendered.
Core Responsibilites:
Verify insurance eligibility, copays, coinsurance, and deductibles for new and established patients prior to appointments. Confirm insurance network status and referral requirements Verify benefits for major imaging and Office-Based Lab (OBL) appointments (e.g., PET scans, nuclear imaging, vein ablations), including determining coverage status. Manage the referral clinical inbox for both new and established patients, ensuring timely processing and follow-up including adding referring providers to the Athena system when not already in the system. Clearly and professionally explain insurance benefits, coverage details, and estimated patient financial responsibility to patients. Update patient information, including maintaining current insurance card images and demographic details. Communicate with other departments when a patient is ineligible or when the front desk must collect patient responsibility. Document benefit verification details and patient communications thoroughly in the electronic health record (Athena One). Maintain compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies when handling patient and insurance information.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or higher preferred. Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in healthcare insurance verification, benefits coordination, or medical billing. Strong Knowledge of Insurance plans (PPO, HMO, Medicare, Medicaid) referrals and prior authorizations. Diagnostic imaging and procedural benefit verification Experience working within an electronic health record system; Athena experience preferred. Ability to communicate complex insurance information clearly to patients and staff. High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and organizational skills. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
