The Benefits Assistor helps low-income community members understand, apply for, and maintain access to public benefits and community resources. This position provides compassionate, culturally responsive assistance to individuals and families navigating programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, housing assistance, cash assistance, utility assistance, and other local, state, and federal resources. The Benefits Assistor serves as a trusted point of contact, helping clients overcome barriers to accessing essential services while maintaining confidentiality, dignity, and respect.
Essential Functions Include:
1. Conduct intake and assess clients' needs, eligibility, and available resources. 2. Provide information and application assistance for public benefits and community programs. 3. Help clients' complete applications, gather required documentation, and submit paperwork accurately. 4. Explain program requirements, deadlines, notices, and next steps in clear, accessible language. 5. Follow up with clients regarding application status, renewals, missing documentation, and changes in circumstances. 6. Connect clients with additional resources, including food, housing, healthcare, transportation, employment, and utility assistance. 7. Maintain accurate and confidential client records and case notes. 8. Advocate for clients when appropriate and help resolve barriers to accessing benefits and services. 9. Develop positive relationships with clients, community organizations, government agencies, and service providers. 10. Participate in community outreach, workshops, enrollment events, and educational activities. 11. Stay informed about changes to benefit programs, eligibility requirements, and community resources. 12. Maintain professional boundaries and follow all organizational policies regarding confidentiality, privacy, and client safety. 13. Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. High school diploma or equivalent. 2. Experience working with low-income individuals, families, or underserved communities. 3. Ability to interact professionally with the public, including clients and their caregivers. 4. Ability to troubleshoot all office machines, including faxes, telephones, copiers, postage meter, etc. 5. Proficient computer and accurate data entry skills with Microsoft Office and other software/database programs. 6. Excellent written, oral and listening skills. 7. Highly organized, with attention to detail and problem-solving abilities. 8. Good telephone skills 9. Ability to establish and maintain boundaries and confidentiality with both clients and staff members. 10. Ability to pass multiple background checks. 11. Ability to complete annual HIPAA training as required. 12. Travel throughout Bennington and Rutland Counties.
Pay:
$41,600.00 - $45,760.00 per year
