The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire two (2) student assistants, in a learning capacity, under the close supervision of the divisions of Transportation Planning and Environmental Analysis. The Student Assistant, in a learning capacity, will have assignments both in the office and the field that will broaden their knowledge of industry practices and procedures, increase their analytical skills related to planning and environmental analysis and the evaluation and construction of projects, and obtain practical experience. Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. Prerequisites Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. 62 per hour. Minimum Qualifications Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Must possess basic knowledge of engineering, planning, environmental, or construction principles. Must demonstrate the ability to apply analytical and problem-solving skills to project evaluations, scope, and scheduling tasks. Must have proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel and Word); familiarity with scheduling or other technical software is desirable. Must have the ability to review technical documents, maps, and reports with attention to detail. Must be able to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, and perform general administrative support tasks (filing, data entry, report preparation) in a professional office setting. Preferred Qualifications Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking. Duties and Responsibilities In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist in applying various evaluation methods in the planning, design, environmental and construction processes of projects. In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist in performing evaluations regarding project scope and schedule and priority. In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist in performing site reviews and verifying field information for evaluation. In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will produce and review maps, technical studies, permit applications and perform document reviews. In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist with calculations, project schedules, resource impact areas and other documents using excel spreadsheet, word, computer scheduling software, and other computer applications. In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist in filing, copy work, data entry, archiving, and preparing and compiling various reports, graphs, charts, and letters. Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers and scanners with or without a reasonable accommodation.
