Superintendent, Veterans Assistance Commission of Macon County Starting Base Salary:
$45,000-$58,000 annually, based on experience, qualifications, training, and accreditation.
Position Summary:
The Veterans Assistance Commission of Macon County is seeking a motivated, organized, compassionate, and service-driven individual to serve as an Administrative Assistant while training to become an accredited Veteran Service Officer (VSO). This position provides administrative support while developing the knowledge and skills necessary to assist Veterans, active-duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, surviving spouses, dependents, and caregivers in obtaining County, State, Federal, and community benefits and services. The selected candidate must complete required training through the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO) and meet all requirements necessary to obtain accreditation recognized by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. With the Superintendent's approval, the annual salary may increase to $58,000 upon accreditation and successful completion of required training. This work is more than a job—it is a calling. Education & Experience Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and customer-service skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer applications. Ability to learn new programs and electronic record systems. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment. Ability to communicate effectively with Veterans and families from varied backgrounds. Valid Illinois driver's license. Ability to successfully complete a background check. Ability to complete required training and obtain and maintain accreditation. Preferred Qualifications Military service with an Honorable or General (Under Honorable Conditions) discharge, or a close family connection providing an understanding of military terminology and culture. Associate's or bachelor's degree. Experience in administrative support, customer service, case management, human services, or a related field. Experience working with Veterans, military families, government agencies, or community-service organizations. Veterans' preference will be provided where permitted by applicable law. Position Summary Essential Responsibilities Provide exceptional customer service to Veterans and their families. Treat every person with kindness, dignity, patience, and respect. Use sound judgment and de-escalation skills when assisting individuals experiencing frustration or distress, while professionally expecting the same respect in return. Work cooperatively as a member of the VACMC team and strive to become a leader. Answer telephones, greet visitors, schedule appointments, and assist with general office operations. Prepare correspondence and reports and maintain accurate, confidential records. Assist with grant administration and other administrative responsibilities. Coordinate Veteran transportation requests and scheduling. Assist Veterans and eligible family members in preparing applications for Federal, State, County, and community benefits. Learn Veterans' laws, regulations, eligibility requirements, and VA claims procedures. Assist in developing, submitting, and monitoring Veterans' claims. Maintain professional relationships with community organizations and government agencies. Attend required training and continuing education to obtain and maintain accreditation. Training normally includes approximately one week of out-of-town continuing education each year. Perform other duties as assigned. Support Veterans and demonstrate pride in serving our community.
Pay:
$45,000.00 - $58,000.00 per year
