Job Description

Job Overview We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Building Department Clerk to join our team! In this vital administrative role, you will serve as the first point of contact for residents, contractors, and internal staff, ensuring smooth communication and efficient processing of building permits, inspections, and related documentation. Your energetic approach and organizational skills will help keep our department running seamlessly, supporting community development and safety initiatives. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to local infrastructure projects while honing your office management expertise. Duties Manage front desk operations by greeting visitors, answering multi-line phone systems, and providing exceptional customer service with professional phone etiquette. Process building permit applications, inspections requests, and related documents accurately using data entry skills and computer literacy. Maintain organized filing systems for permits, inspection reports, and confidential department records. Utilize software for basic bookkeeping tasks related to permit fees and departmental expenses. Coordinate appointment scheduling for inspections and communicate effectively with contractors, residents, and internal teams. Support office management duties including supply inventory, document preparation, and general clerical tasks. Handle sensitive information with discretion while ensuring timely communication and follow-up on departmental inquiries. Requirements Proven office experience with strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) along with excellent computer skills. Experience with data entry, filing systems, and managing confidential information securely. Familiarity with office management tools such as multi-line phone systems and customer support procedures. Strong customer service background with excellent phone etiquette and communication skills. Ability to multitask efficiently while managing time effectively in a fast-paced environment. Prior clerical or administrative experience in a government or municipal setting is preferred.
