Job Summary:

The Switchboard (PBX) Operator is responsible for receiving and directing all incoming calls to the hospital, performing in-house paging, and managing emergency communication systems. This role ensures accurate and timely communication across the facility while maintaining updated records and supporting hospital operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Receives and routes incoming calls to appropriate departments, extensions, or patient rooms Handles calls from in-house extensions and external callers Manages all emergency calls, codes, and paging systems Contacts appropriate personnel based on emergent or urgent needs Performs intercom paging and provides general information to callers Maintains updated switchboard files, including room numbers, admissions, and discharges Keeps employee and on-call contact information current for disaster procedures Contacts on-call personnel as requested, especially during evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays Takes and relays messages via paging, beeper systems, or direct calls Ensures all bulletin board information and disaster procedures are current Remains knowledgeable of all updates related to switchboard operations

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent required This is a PRN position; hours and days may vary

Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Capability to perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment Excellent communication and organizational skills
