SUMMARY:

The Assistant Educator works as part of Florida Oceanographic Society's Education team to carry out daily educational programming for visitors to the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center. This position involves considerable public speaking and guest interaction in an outdoor setting at a coastal science center and aquarium. Work direction and priorities are given by the Education Manager as direct supervisor. Typical work schedule will vary depending on need - usually two to four 6-hour shifts per week, including weekends.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead informal educational programs around the Coastal Center Supervise guest-animal interactions at the ray and invertebrate touch tanks Lead scripted on-microphone educational presentations for mixed-age audiences of 50+ guests Maintain a professional relationship with guests, staff, and volunteers Assist with supervision of volunteers and interns within the Education Department Assist with exhibit cleaning and upkeep Occasionally assist with Education Department special events and activities Occasionally assist with the delivery of field trip and virtual field trip lessons Rarely assist with educational outreach programs throughout the community Rarely assist with summer camp programing under supervision of Camp Director Rarely assist with educational nighttime sea turtle nesting walks Perform other related duties as assigned by management

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Current enrollment in a bachelor's degree program in biology, marine biology, ecology, conservation, environmental science, or science education (degree at least 50% completed) Ability to work outdoors in Florida's unpredictable weather, stand for up to 3 hours, kneel, lift 30 pounds, tolerate heat, cold, rain, humidity, and biting/stinging insects throughout the workday (this is an entirely outdoor role) Excellent verbal and written communication skills Previous teaching/instructing experience of any type Ability to work both weekend days most weeks

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in biology, marine biology, ecology, conservation, environmental science, or science education Minimum of 3 months of previous science teaching experience in a formal (classroom) or informal (zoo, aquarium, nature center) setting Previous experience working with children Page 2 of 2 2

Florida Oceanographic Society is an environmentally focused nonprofit organization founded in 1964. Our mission is to inspire the conservation of Florida's coastal ecosystems through education, research, and advocacy. We operate the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center, a 57-acre coastal science center and aquarium located on South Hutchinson Island in Stuart, Florida.
