Job Description

Illinois Agricultural and Conservation Technical Specialist The Illinois Agricultural and Conservation Technical Specialist supports AFT's Midwest Region producer-led programs, especially in Southeast Illinois, working with farmers, landowners, state and federal agencies, agricultural service providers, and conservation leaders. This remote, permanent position (based within 100 miles of Effingham County) reports to the Midwest Senior Program Manager overseeing water quality initiatives, supporting NRCS Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) activities. Duties include providing technical assistance and agronomy expertise to farmers and partners on conservation cropping systems; developing conservation practice recommendations per NRCS standards; creating technical documents and reports for farmer-led watershed programs; gathering field-based data including soil health assessments; developing and launching farmer-led watershed programs through webinars, networking events, and field days; supporting establishment of farmer-led watershed groups; and representing AFT at public meetings and educational events. Approximately 40% travel is required, primarily within Southeast Illinois.
Requirements:
BA/BS degree plus minimum 3 years related work experience in agriculture or watershed/water quality outreach and planning (advanced degree may substitute for 1 year experience); Midwest conservation and agriculture experience with nutrient management, soil health principles, and conservation cropping systems including
USDA-NRCS
conservation planning; Certified Conservation Planner and/or Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) preferred; experience with public outreach and community engagement; strong communication and interpersonal skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office, ArcGIS preferred.
Salary range:
$70,000-$75,000/year.
