Program Naturalist

Job Description

Program Naturalist Irvine Nature Center Irvine's Program Naturalist is a newly created part-time position within the Environmental Education department. We are seeking an environmental educator specifically to run various public programs throughout the week, evenings and weekends (Saturday and/or Sunday). This includes leading occasional overnight campouts for school and other groups. This part-time position of approximately 8-15 hours per week will report to Irvine's Manager of Public Programs. There will be additional hours available to lead/ support other programs as needed. Primary responsibilities will include planning, developing, and leading a wide variety of educational programs that are centered around the natural history of the Maryland Piedmont. We are looking for someone who is passionate about environmental education, and enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with children and visitors of all ages to foster connection and meaningful experiences with nature and the world around them.
Position Responsibilities:
Public Programs:
  • Teach existing lessons and lead activities about animals, plants, ecology, and conservation
  • Lead children in a variety of nature-themed arts, activities and outdoor explorations
  • Design new creative lesson plans and hands-on activities for various age groups
  • Guide small-group hikes to explore Irvine's wetlands and Native American site
  • Become trained in the handling of our animal ambassadors in order to share them with the public. Urban Education Outreach and Camping Programs
  • Assist Irvine's Manager of Public Programs in leading environmental education programs for elementary, middle and high school students.
  • Plan and lead overnight camping programs for Baltimore City and County students.
  • Inventory, organize and re-order camping supplies as needed Other Education Programs
  • Assist with developing and leading programing for scout groups.
  • Assist, as needed, with Irvine's Signature Programs such as Springfest, Holidays With Hoot, theEat, Drink and Learn Series, and Pumpkins on the Green.
Qualifications:
  • Strong knowledge of natural history; genuine interest in outdoor education
  • Minimum of two years of environmental education/teaching experience
  • Eager to learn new approaches and best practices in environmental education and teaching children and adults.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills
  • Availability on Saturdays and/or Sundays a must; weekday flexibility is helpful.
  • Ability to work in hot, cold, humid, rainy, and buggy weather and adaptable to changing weather conditions.
  • Reliable transportation, valid license preferred.
Salary:
$20/ hour, 15-18 hours per week. Additional hours possible, as needed.
