Job Summary:

Tracy Aviary's Conservation Science Program helps conserve birds and their habitats through community science. Focusing on key local habitats and pressing regional conservation issues, our goals are to gather novel information about local avian ecology, inform habitat restoration and stewardship, and engage a diverse community in scientific data collection.

Primary Duties:

Salt Lake Avian Collision Survey (80%) Approximately two-thirds of all migratory bird species migrate at night, and many of these birds miss seasonal migratory cues, wander off course, and collide with windows as a result of light pollution. In order to document light pollution and its impacts on birds in Salt Lake City, Tracy Aviary has created the Salt Lake Avian Collision Survey (SLACS). In this position, you will: Conduct early morning surveys in downtown Salt Lake City to document bird window collisions during September and October Assist with volunteer coordination to create a SLACS route survey schedule for the season Support the Conservation Outreach Ecologist in updating survey maps and training protocols Entry and year-over-year analysis of SLACS data Educate the public about bird window collision prevention and support consultations and decal/Acopian Birdsaver installs Create and present a season report for the data collected at the conclusion of the fall surveys Other Projects as needed (20%) Train for and support bird banding at the Nature Center at Pia Okwai Support Non-breeding season bird surveys & bird walks Support community outreach and education programs
