Mitchell's Nursery & Greenhouse is a family-owned retail and wholesale nursery and greenhouse in King, NC. We grow much of the plant material we sell, including bedding plants, hanging baskets, geraniums, poinsettias, trees, shrubs, and other seasonal crops. Our grower positions include independent watering, irrigation management, pH and EC monitoring, fertility work, scouting, spraying, recordkeeping, transplanting, and other nursery production work. We are hiring one full-time grower and will hire at either the Grower 1 or Grower 2 level based on experience, demonstrated ability, and fit with our team. Our preference is to hire an experienced Grower 2 who can independently manage crops and take increasing responsibility for fertility, pest and disease management, spraying, and crop decisions. We will also consider a strong Grower 1 candidate who has good judgment, works well independently, takes ownership of their work, and has the ability and interest to develop into a more advanced grower. This is not a position where you will be given a list of tasks every few minutes. Growers are expected to manage an assigned section, keep track of crops that need attention, return to unfinished tasks after interruptions, and recognize problems before crop quality declines. General grower responsibilities After training, you will be responsible for independently managing an assigned growing area. You will make daily watering decisions using hand watering and automated irrigation. You will adjust watering based on weather, temperature, sunlight, season, day length, plant size, container size, and crop needs. You will keep track of crops or individual plants that need to be checked again during the day. You will help cover other growers' sections on their scheduled days off. You will take and record pH and EC readings. You will scout crops while watering and watch for insects, disease, nutrient problems, irrigation problems, and other signs of stress. You will maintain accurate crop and treatment records. You will mix fertilizers and apply treatments according to your level of responsibility. You will help with transplanting, spacing, pruning, moving plants, labeling, seeding, cleanup, and other nursery production work when growing responsibilities allow. Because we are also a retail nursery, growers will occasionally assist customers and help other employees as needed. Customer assistance is a part of our grower positions as well as our company-wide expectations. Grower 1 Pay range: $18 to $21 per hour, depending on experience and demonstrated ability. Grower 1 can be an entry-level or developing grower position for the right candidate. After training, a Grower 1 is expected to: Independently water and maintain an assigned growing section. Understand when plants need water and when they do not. Understand how weather, season, plant size, and container size affect watering. Accurately take and record pH and EC measurements. Mix fertilizers according to established instructions. Recognize when a plant or crop is not growing normally and report the problem early. Scout for insects, disease symptoms, and other crop problems. Apply pesticides, fungicides, fertilizers, and other treatments under the direction of the Grower 2 or Head Grower. Take ownership of their section and also take responsibility for other sections when providing coverage. A Grower 1 is not expected to independently diagnose difficult crop problems, make fertilizer changes, select pesticide treatments, or make growth regulator decisions. Grower 2 Pay range: $22 to $25 per hour, depending on experience and demonstrated technical growing ability. Grower 2 is our preferred level for this opening. A Grower 2 should meet all Grower 1 expectations and have enough commercial greenhouse or nursery experience to take on additional technical responsibility. The Grower 2 will be expected to: Independently manage a major growing section. Interpret pH and EC results and recommend fertility changes. Identify common insects, diseases, nutrient problems, and cultural problems. Develop proposed corrective treatments and discuss those recommendations with the Head Grower before implementation. Follow problems through treatment and determine whether the correction worked. Maintain spray schedules and pesticide application records. Help plan and direct spraying. Maintain a schedule for releasing beneficials, and keep them on a just-in-time order and release them in the greenhouse. Maintain growth records on major crops. Help prioritize growing work across the nursery. Provide direction and technical help to Grower 1 employees. After becoming familiar with our operation, help train new growers in watering, scouting, recordkeeping, pH and EC measurements, and general crop management. Obtain and maintain the appropriate North Carolina pesticide applicator license. Previous grower descriptions have also required pesticide licensing and included spraying, nutrient management, and pesticide recordkeeping as core responsibilities. What we are looking for The right person for either level needs to be self-directed, organized, accountable, and flexible. You should be comfortable working independently for much of the day without constant supervision. You need to be able to stay productive when working alone. You need a reliable way to keep track of crops, tasks, measurements, and plants that need to be checked again. You need to be able to switch to another task when something more important comes up and then remember to return to what you were doing. Most importantly, you need to take ownership of your growing section rather than waiting for someone else to point out what needs attention. Schedule This is a full-time position. Weekend work is required. Depending on the final position and team schedule, your regular workweek may include Saturday and or Sunday. Some weekends off are available during the year, particularly outside our busiest seasons. During our busiest six-week period, employees should expect up to three 6-day workweeks. Hours vary somewhat by season, weather, and crop needs. Greenhouse growing sometimes requires earlier or later work for watering, spraying, or other time-sensitive crop needs. Compensation Grower 1: $18 to $21 per hour. Grower 2: $22 to $25 per hour. Placement within the range will be based on demonstrated ability, commercial growing experience, horticultural knowledge, and the level of responsibility the candidate is prepared to handle. A degree in horticulture is helpful but is not required for the right candidate. Previous job titles and years of nursery experience alone will not determine whether someone is hired as Grower 1 or Grower 2.
