Job Description
Overview Greene Acres Family Farm is looking for an experienced, dependable, hands-on Lead Farmhand to join our team. This is a leadership position for someone who truly enjoys farm life, working with animals, and being part of the day-to-day care and operation of a growing family farm. The ideal candidate is an experienced horseperson who is comfortable working independently, leading a small barn team, operating farm equipment, and taking pride in keeping the farm, animals, and grounds well cared for. We are looking for someone who is responsible, hardworking, organized, proactive, and confident enough to lead while still being willing to do the work alongside the team. Duties Animal & Barn Care Provide daily care and oversight of all farm animals. Feed, water, groom, turn out, bring in, and monitor horses and other livestock. Maintain clean, safe, organized barns, stalls, paddocks, and animal areas. Monitor animals for changes in behavior, health, injury, or other concerns and communicate issues promptly. Assist with routine horse handling, training, and general equine care. Coordinate and assist with farrier and veterinary appointments. Maintain accurate and up-to-date veterinary, vaccination, medication, farrier, and other animal records . Ensure animal care routines and schedules are consistently followed Team Leadership Lead and supervise the barn team and help establish daily priorities. Delegate tasks and ensure assigned work is completed properly and on schedule. Train and mentor barn staff in animal care, safety, cleanliness, and farm procedures. Lead by example with a positive, professional, and team-oriented attitude. Communicate effectively with farm ownership and team members. Help maintain a calm, respectful, drama-free working environment. Identify issues before they become problems and take initiative to address them. Farm & Grounds Operate tractors, mowers, loaders, and other farm machinery and equipment safely. Assist with mowing, brush clearing, fencing, pasture maintenance, snow removal, and general property upkeep. Assist with planting, harvesting, gardening, and other seasonal farming activities. Maintain fences, gates, shelters, equipment, and other farm infrastructure. Assist with general repairs and maintenance when capable. Keep equipment, tools, barns, and work areas clean, organized, and properly maintained. Assist with preparing the property for farm events, workshops, camps, and visitors. Farming & Seasonal Work Assist with day-to-day farming operations. Help maintain gardens, pastures, fields, and crops. Participate in planting, harvesting, watering, weeding, and seasonal farm projects. Assist with preparation for changing seasons and winterization of the farm. Be willing to take on a variety of tasks — no two days on the farm are exactly alike! Requirements Previous professional equine experience is required. Strong knowledge of basic horse care, handling, feeding, grooming, turnout, and barn management. Experience working with livestock is strongly preferred. Previous farm or agricultural experience preferred. Experience operating tractors and other farm machinery is required. Ability to safely operate mowers, tractors, loaders, and other equipment. Strong leadership and communication skills. Ability to work independently and make sound decisions. Excellent organization and attention to detail. Ability to maintain accurate animal and veterinary records. Physically capable of performing demanding farm work in all seasons and weather conditions. Dependable, punctual, and willing to work as part of a team. Comfortable working around a variety of animals. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Is comfortable around livestock and enjoys learning about different species. Is a natural leader who others can rely on. Notices what needs to be done without always being asked. Takes ownership and pride in their work. Is organized and follows through. Can work independently while communicating well with the team. Isn't afraid to get dirty and tackle whatever the day brings. Understands that working on a farm means doing a little bit of everything. Values safety, cleanliness, kindness, and respect for both animals and people. This is more than a farmhand position. We are looking for someone who is ready to take ownership, lead the barn team, care deeply for the animals, and become an integral part of the daily operation of Greene Acres.
