AND you want to do all of that right in the middle of city life? Then join our loading team at The Great Outdoors! We've been here on South Congress for over 30 years, and we are looking to add to our loading team for Spring! This role is a great way to get your foot into the door of the nursery and gardening world. It's also great for folks that want an active, highly physical job, and don't shy from getting dirty. Plant knowledge certainly helpful, but not required -- you'll pick up quickly! You must be able to lift a minimum of 65 lbs and work in all weather conditions. As a Loader, you play a crucial role in ensuring efficient and safe unloading of all incoming plants and nursery retail products, in addition to assisting our guests with heavy lifts and and loading their vehicles with soils, pots, etc, and are the general "muscle" that supports ALL departments.

Product Unloading:

Under direction of the Receiving Manager, unload, sort, and process incoming plants and nursery retail items from 18 wheelers, box trucks, and flatbed trailers in all weather.

Pottery Stocking:

Under direction of the Receiving Manager, the Pottery Buyer, and Stockists, assist with keeping the pottery decks stocked on the sales floor.

Pottery Drilling:

Operate a hand drill or drill press to create drainage holes in pottery for guests as needed.

Grounds Maintenance:

raking, sweeping, leaf blowing of oak tree and other plant debris to keep the nursery looking sharp and tidy.

Guest Support:

Take radio calls from cashiers to assist guests with loading bags of soils, mulches, compost, and other amendments and landscaping materials into their cars. Also assists with hard to reach or heavy retail items as guests need them.

Delivery Assistance:

When needed, acts as a second pair of hands for deliveries that require a team lift.

Trash and Debris Removal:

Regularly collect and dispose of trash, pallet debris, and other waste created by processing retail products to keep the nursery grounds and receiving area clean and hazard-free. Remove debris from drains as needed.

Nursery Display Support:

occasionally assist in setting up large plant and pottery displays under the guidance of the Floor Supervisor, Stockists, and/or Buyers, ensuring they are visually appealing and organized to attract customers.

Equipment Maintenance:

Perform seasonal maintenance on gardening equipment, such as drills, chainsaws, propane heaters, pull carts, etc to ensure they are in proper working condition.

Safety Compliance:

Adhere to safety guidelines and protocols while operating machinery and handling chemicals, prioritizing the well-being of yourself and others.

Seasonal Tasks:

Assist in seasonal tasks, such as planting seasonal flower beds or sample gardens, putting up lighting and holiday decorations, putting up and taking down shade cloth or frost cloth, creating temporary greenhouses to protect plants from cold temperatures, and the like, to enhance the nursery's overall success and visual appeal.
