Every member of our Grounds Maintenance team plays a vital role in delivering the Escondido Experience — ensuring the property remains beautiful, healthy, and welcoming for members and guests. About the Role As Superintendent of Horticulture & Grounds, you will own the ornamental and landscape presentation of everything beyond the fairways — the Great House arrival sequence, the grounds surrounding La Hacienda, the Lake Club, and every amenity in between. This is not a desk job. You will work alongside a team of three, in the soil, setting the standard with your own hands while managing the schedules, training, and development of your crew. You will report directly to the Director of Agronomy and work peer-to-peer with the Golf Course Superintendent, sharing resources, coordinating programs, and presenting a unified face to the membership. The ideal candidate brings deep horticultural knowledge, a feel for Texas Hill Country plant material, and the communication skills to represent the department to members and club leadership with confidence and warmth. Properties You Will Steward The Great House La Hacienda The Smoke Shack Lake Club Comfort Stations Welcome Cottage Sports Complex What You Will Do Plan, install, and maintain seasonal plantings, ornamental beds, shrubs, trees, and turf across all clubhouse and amenity areas — hands-on, every day.

Lead a crew of three:

set the pace in the field, manage daily scheduling, provide on-the-job training, and guide performance with care and consistency. Develop and manage the horticulture operating budget in close coordination with the Director of Agronomy. Maintain irrigation systems, drainage, and hardscape features across your assigned areas. Coordinate with the Golf Course Superintendent on equipment sharing, chemical and fertilizer programs, water management, and property-wide agronomic standards. Source and evaluate plant material, fertilizers, and horticultural products; manage vendor relationships and ensure quality at every stage. Support department-wide initiatives, special projects, and capital planning as directed by the Director of Agronomy. Provide grounds support during tournaments, member events, and peak season in collaboration with the golf team. Maintain a safe working environment and ensure full compliance with safety protocols and chemical handling regulations. Serve as a warm, knowledgeable face of the Agronomy department when interacting with members and club staff. What We Are Looking For A degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Ornamental Horticulture, or a related field is preferred. Five or more years of progressive experience in horticulture or landscape management, ideally in a private club, resort, or high-end residential environment. Proven experience leading a grounds or horticulture crew, with a style that inspires rather than just directs. Working knowledge of irrigation systems, integrated pest management, and plant material suited to the Texas Hill Country climate. Strong, clear communication — equally comfortable talking shop with your crew and discussing plant selection with a member. Current state pesticide and herbicide applicator's license, or the ability and commitment to obtain one within an agreed timeline. Working Conditions This is a primarily outdoor role in all seasons and weather conditions across the club's property. Early morning starts, weekend availability, and flexibility around club events are expected. The role involves regular walking, bending, and lifting. This is a working superintendent position — we designed it that way on purpose.
