Job Duties:

Perform, coordinate, and oversee daily agricultural operations involving livestock, crops, equipment, facilities, and agricultural production. Care for, handle, feed, breed, treat, and maintain accountability of livestock in accordance with established TDCJ procedures. Assist with or oversee planting, cultivating, harvesting, processing, and distribution of agricultural commodities. Operate, inspect, maintain, and oversee tractors, farm machinery, vehicles, tools, and specialized agricultural equipment. Perform and coordinate maintenance, construction, and repair of agricultural buildings, barns, fences, pens, equipment, and other facilities. Prepare and monitor livestock feed rations and maintain appropriate feed and supply inventories. Assist with or perform routine livestock health checks, preventive treatments, medication administration, and other animal-health procedures as authorized. Supervise, direct, train, and monitor inmate workers assigned to agricultural operations. Ensure inmates remain in assigned work areas, follow established procedures, maintain productivity, and comply with TDCJ security and safety requirements. Maintain constant awareness of inmate movement and behavior and take appropriate action when security concerns or policy violations are identified. Conduct or assist with searches of work areas, equipment, buildings, and other agricultural areas as required. Maintain strict accountability and security of tools, equipment, livestock, medications, chemicals, supplies, and other TDCJ property. Maintain accurate inventories and ensure equipment, tools, medications, and supplies are properly stored, secured, and documented. Maintain accurate production records, livestock records, inventory records, inmate work records, equipment records, and other required documentation. Prepare reports, correspondence, work schedules, production information, and other documentation as required. Monitor agricultural production and identify problems affecting productivity, quality, safety, animal health, or operational efficiency. Plan, schedule, coordinate, and prioritize agricultural activities to meet established production goals and operational requirements. Provide technical assistance, instruction, and guidance to other employees and inmate workers regarding agricultural practices and procedures. Assist in developing and implementing training programs for employees and inmate workers. Monitor work areas for proper housekeeping, sanitation, safety, security, and compliance with applicable policies and procedures. Ensure agricultural operations are conducted safely and efficiently while maintaining appropriate security of the unit and surrounding areas. Identify equipment, supply, facility, livestock, or production needs and communicate those needs to appropriate management personnel. Assist management with evaluating agricultural operations, production results, staffing needs, equipment requirements, and operational concerns. Respond to emergencies and take appropriate action involving livestock, equipment, facilities, inmate workers, or security situations. Perform correctional and custodial duties as required, including assisting with inmate searches, escape searches, inmate transportation, and other security-related activities. Follow all applicable TDCJ policies, procedures, safety requirements, agricultural practices, and correctional security standards. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the successful operation of TDCJ agricultural programs. Must obtain a pesticide license within the first six months of hire date.
