The Horticulture Specialist is responsible for the comprehensive maintenance and enhancement of all ornamental landscapes and grounds at Willow Oaks Country Club. This role combines hands-on horticultural work with collaborative responsibilities within a team, ensuring the highest standards of aesthetics, safety, and member experience. Working collaboratively with the Director of Agronomy and Golf Course Superintendent, the Horticulture Specialist leads daily operations and oversees long-term planning for all landscaped areas, including clubhouse grounds, entranceways, recreational facilities, and designated golf course plantings. The schedule for this position is Monday-Friday from 6am-2:30pm and every other weekend from 6am-10am.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee and participate in the maintenance of all ornamental plantings, including annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, turf edges, and seasonal displays. Perform and lead all aspects of landscape care: planting, transplanting, pruning, mulching, watering, fertilizing, weeding, and propagation. Maintain high standards for cleanliness, safety, and visual presentation across all club grounds. Manage irrigation systems and support maintenance of related infrastructure. Assist with care of naturalized areas where applicable. Develop and maintain a seasonal maintenance calendar and communicate plans with departmental leadership. Coordinate projects and daily operations with the Golf Course Superintendent and Director of Agronomy. Prioritize and execute tasks to maintain exceptional quality standards. Foster a professional, team-oriented environment focused on safety, accountability, and continuous improvement. Safely operate and maintain hand tools, mowers, trimmers, and other equipment. Maintain a professional appearance and work environment at all times. Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, inventory, purchases, and budgets. Other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum of 2 years of experience in horticulture, grounds management, or related leadership role (or equivalent combination of education and experience). Valid driver's license required. Virginia Certified Pesticide Applicator License (Category 3-A required; additional categories preferred), or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe. Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions. Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting (typically up to 50 pounds, occasionally up to 100 pounds). Regular use of tools, machinery, and exposure to chemicals and mechanical equipment. Work environment may include noise, fumes, and uneven terrain. Competitive pay based on experience.
