A Farm or Ranch Manager manages operations at a farm or ranch. Directs crop production and management of livestock herds and supervises farm workers who grow and harvest crops or tend to farm animals. Purchases supplies such as seed, fertilizer or animal feed, operates and repairs farm equipment, and maintains facilities. Monitors prices and adapts production as needed due to market changes, weather conditions or other factors.

Job Description

The Herd Manager oversees all aspects of the cow herd, including breeding, health, movement and culling. In addition, the Herd Manager will oversee all herdsman and coordinate with parlor, young stock and feed managers.
Essential Duties:
Leadership skills that must incorporate compliance with all federal and state agencies that includes, hiring, disciplining, rewarding, performance reviews and team meetings. Skill set, and requirements should be measured by supervisor training to include nuts and bolts of supervision, fill out disciplinary action forms and training on hiring/terminating associates. Analysis of cow records including entry of day to day activities, use of reports and cow pages and proper day to day reporting of all cattle activity measured by compliance with DC 305 software Coordination of all day to day activities with vets and other outside consultants measured by communication with upper management on a day to day basis. Direct supervision of herdsmen, maternity and hospital barn measured by associate communication and participation of daily activities. Operates various farm equipment measured by skill level of knowledge and experience with all farm equipment being used on a day to day basis Back up for feed manager on off days Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Dairy/Animal Science or related field preferred 5+ years of related experience with large herd (1,000+ cows) required 3+ years of direct supervisory/management experience Advance knowledge of feed and nutrition Experience with computerized feed systems preferred Ability to speak Dairy Spanish a plus Must be flexible and willing to work the demands of the department which may be subject to evenings, weekends and holidays.

Regularly standing, walking and sitting Regularly lifting and/or moving up to 20 pounds Regularly reaching above shoulder height Regularly pushing and pulling of gates 20 times per hour with 10 pounds of pulling force
