Full-Time General Description The Barn/Herd Manager works with the Executive Director and the guidance of the Board of Directors adhering to policies and procedures and making recommendations for modifications or additions to optimize the functions at GaitWay. This position will work closely with the E.D. and other staff in a team-based model of leadership and management of the programs and functions. E.D. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Manage day to day functions of barn, horses and facilities. Interview, hire, schedule and supervise Farm Labor. Evaluate performances and general oversight. Supervision of Farm Labor including organizing the schedule of barn shifts, assigning duties, approving time cards, and evaluating performance. Address and manage all Farm Labor personnel issues, including counseling and discussing dismissals of employees with ED. Coordinate with the E.D. to manage the groundskeeping, facility maintenance and all repairs. Assist staff to ensure the safety of riders, guests, visitors, volunteers, and horses through regular assessment of the facility and equipment. Ensure that unsafe situations are reported immediately and rectified. Ensure proper maintenance of equipment Responsible for maintaining social media platforms.
HERD MANAGER
Maintain all horse files and records. Oversee care and maintenance of all horses on property. Maintain vet, farrier, dental, feed, supplements, and medication for the herd. Evaluate emergency and non-emergency horse health issues. Make emergency vet calls, and notify the E.D. as soon as possible. Evaluate new horses and continued use of horses. Develop the exercising and training of program horses. Communicate with all horse owners to ensure proper care of their horses. Order feed and supplements, arrange feeding and supplement schedules for the herd. Determine turn in-turn out schedule, blanketing, and fly protection procedures for the herd.
OTHER TASKS
Act as an advisor to the E.D. as it relates to operations, improvements, efficiencies, deficiencies, daily herd management and provide and execute solutions. Communicate and support staff to assist in the overall operations of the organization. Actively participate in creating a positive environment and culture at GaitWay Therapeutic Horsemanship, where everyone feels safe, happy, and valued. Participate in special events and projects created by staff. Maintain professional standards of appearance, communication, and timeliness. Additional duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Must have good observational skills. Must be able to walk, stand, sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above head, pull, bend, climb ladders, and carry up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work holidays and weekends. Must be able to actively work in inclement weather. Must have fine motor dexterity.
