Position Overview We are seeking a highly skilled Fisheries Methods & Equipment Specialist to support the NOAA Fisheries Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) at the Mississippi Laboratories in Pascagoula, MS. This role serves as a crucial technical bridge between research vessel management, gear fabrication, and scientific research. The ideal candidate will serve as Captain or First Mate aboard Class III research vessels, lead the construction and repair of specialized fishing gear (such as Turtle Excluder Devices and Bycatch Reduction Devices), and assist with technical outreach to commercial fishers and law enforcement both domestically and internationally.

Key Responsibilities Class III Research Vessel Operations:
Perform duties as Captain or First Mate aboard Mississippi Laboratory Class III research vessels during research cruises. Manage overall vessel operations including safe navigation, vessel cleanliness, seaworthiness, inventory management, and safe handling of all cargo and deck equipment. Oversee maintenance, preparation, and operation of Class III vessels and Class I small boats.
Gear Construction & Technical Expertise:
Construct, repair, and maintain selective fishing gear (TEDs, BRDs) for survey cruises and unit research projects. Interpret and construct gear from technical schematics and diagrams. Provide expert at-sea gear support for Mississippi Laboratories survey cruises.
Outreach & Technical Training:
Assist in organizing and conducting workshops, dockside visits, and training for commercial fishers regarding federally required gear in the Southeast and internationally as requested. Train federal and state marine law enforcement personnel on proper gear inspection procedures.
Facility Support:
Maintain research gear, shop equipment, and warehouse spaces. Required Qualifications (Essential)
Vessel Experience & Licensing:
Minimum 5 years of experience as Captain of a research or fishing vessel (including operating and maintaining associated equipment). Current U.S. Coast Guard Masters License for 100-ton vessels or greater . Obtain and maintain a USCG License for the Operation of Uninspected Passenger Vessels ( 6-Pack license ). Obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential ( TWIC card ). Maintain all necessary certifications and training as required by the NOAA Small Boat Program for Class III vessels.
Net Fabrication Experience:
Minimum 5 years of experience in net construction and repair within a commercial fishery or net shop.
Technical Proficiency:
Demonstrated ability to read and work from fishing gear technical schematics and construction diagrams.
Clearance:
Ability to pass a federal background check for Public Trust clearance. Preferred Qualifications (Desirable) Knowledge of selective fishing methods, bycatch reduction technology, and current fishing gear regulations. Certification in small boat operations (fast rescue boat). Experience delivering effective technical presentations and hands-on gear construction demonstrations using multimedia equipment.
Pay:
$50,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
