LABORER POSITION SUMMARY

The Laborer is a hands-on team member who supports fabrication in the shop and installation crews in the field at Green Mountain Welding, Inc., including participation in steel erection activities under the direction of the foreman. This is an entry-level role for someone dependable, physically capable, and motivated to build skills toward fabrication, welding, and ironwork over time. Reporting to the Shop Manager in the shop and the Field Lead in the field, the Laborer is a critical contributor to safe, productive operations at every stage of the company's work.

• Shop and job sites are kept clean, organized, and safe throughout the day without being asked and without waiting until the end of the shift
• Assigned tasks including material handling, grinding, drilling, and fitting assistance are completed accurately and on time without rework
• 100% tie-off compliance is maintained at all times when exposed to fall hazards on active erection and installation sites
• Time is tracked by job accurately and material shortages or issues are communicated to the foreman immediately upon discovery
• The laborer demonstrates measurable progress toward the next skill level within the first 90 days and takes advantage of every training opportunity offered

OBJECTIVES

• Assist welders and fabricators in the shop with material handling, cutting, grinding, drilling, deburring, fitting assistance, cleaning, painting, and finish prep
• Load, secure, and unload materials, tools, and finished product for delivery to job sites
• Support field installations of railings, stairs, and structural steel including layout assistance, anchoring, drilling, bolting, and cleanup
• Participate in steel erection under foreman direction including rigging and signaling, landing and connecting members, plumbing and bolting up, and installing perimeter fall protection
• Operate shop and site equipment as trained and authorized including forklifts, telehandlers, scissor lifts, boom lifts, and hand and power tools
• Maintain tools and equipment in good working order and report damage or missing items immediately
• Assist with filling out truck sheets and keeping company trucks clean and organized
• Keep shop and job sites clean, organized, and safe throughout the day -- not only at quitting time
• Follow all safety requirements including PPE use, 100% tie-off when exposed to fall hazards, hot-work awareness, and rigging inspection
• Track time by job accurately and communicate material shortages or issues to the foreman promptly
• Obtain OSHA 10 certification within 30 days of employment as a condition of continued field work
• Actively pursue skill development toward fitting and welding by engaging with all training opportunities provided by the Shop Trainer and Field Lead

PERFORMANCE METRICS

The Laborer is held accountable to the following performance metrics:

• Task completion accuracy rate: The percentage of assigned tasks, including material handling, grinding, drilling, deburring, and fitting assistance, completed accurately and without rework in a given week.
• 100% tie-off compliance rate: The percentage of time the Laborer maintains full tie-off compliance at every elevation and during every erection and installation activity, verified through Field Lead observation and site safety checks. The target is 100% with zero exceptions. Fall protection compliance is a condition of continued field work at Green Mountain Welding.
• OSHA 10 completion: Whether the Laborer obtains OSHA 10 certification within 30 days of employment as required. This is a binary metric with a hard deadline. Field work cannot continue past the 30-day mark without it, and the company covers the cost of training. Completion on time reflects the Laborer's commitment to the role and to the safety standards that protect the entire crew.
• Time and documentation accuracy rate: The percentage of days where job hours and truck sheet entries are submitted accurately, completely, and without corrections required by the office.

Inaccurate time tracking creates errors in job costing, billing, and payroll that take far more time to correct than they took to cause. The Laborer's documentation is a direct input to how the company understands its own cost performance.

• Skills progression rate: Whether the Laborer demonstrates measurable advancement toward the next skill level, including fitting fundamentals, equipment certifications, and welding exposure, within the first 90 days and on a continuing basis thereafter, as assessed by the Shop Trainer and Field Lead.

Green Mountain Welding invests in developing its people from the ground up. A Laborer who is not progressing is not taking advantage of the opportunity this role is designed to provide, and stalled development is a flag for the Shop Manager to address directly.

Completes grinding, drilling, and fitting assistance tasks accurately enough that the welder or foreman does not have to redo the work.

Learns and operates assigned shop and field equipment safely as trained and performs pre-use inspections without being prompted.

Communication:

Tells the foreman immediately when something is wrong; a material shortage, a safety concern, a broken tool, rather than hoping someone else notices.

Teamwork:

Supports welders, fabricators, and erectors without ego, does the work that needs doing, and maintains a positive attitude throughout the shift.

Cleanliness and Organization:

Takes personal responsibility for a clean and organized shop and job site throughout the day and treats it as a point of pride.

Learning Orientation:

Actively pays attention to how skilled trades are performed, asks good questions, and applies coaching from the Shop Trainer and Field Lead.

Accountability:

Takes ownership of assigned tasks, does not cut corners, and immediately owns mistakes rather than hiding them.

Documentation:

Tracks time by job and truck sheet entries accurately enough that the office can code hours and costs without corrections.

Adaptability:

Moves between shop and field assignments willingly and maintains a productive attitude when the schedule or task list changes without notice.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Prior construction, shop, or general labor experience preferred; steel erection or ironwork exposure a plus
• Comfortable working at heights with fall protection and around cranes and suspended loads
• Able to lift 50+ lbs regularly, work on feet all day, and work outdoors year-round in Vermont conditions
• Valid driver's license and clean driving record; ability to drive shop trucks a plus
• OSHA 10 required or willingness to obtain within 30 days of employment (company will pay for training; employee must complete it on their own time)
• Dependable, safety-minded, and motivated to learn fabrication and welding skills

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Must be able to lift, carry, and maneuver materials, tools, and steel components weighing up to 75 pounds regularly
• Must be able to stand, walk, climb, kneel, and perform sustained physical labor for full shifts in shop and field environments
• Must be able to work at heights with full fall protection compliance on active erection and installation sites
• Must be able to work outdoors year-round in Vermont weather conditions including extreme cold, wind, rain, and snow
