GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this position is to direct, manage, oversee, and perform duties necessary to maintain City parks, athletic complexes, and/or the Rolling Hills Conference Center.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Plans, coordinates, and oversees daily operations and activities related to maintenance activities; supervises and evaluates personnel; directs and monitors work activities to ensure safe work practices, work quality, and accuracy; ensures compliance with applicable rules, policies, and procedures. Creates daily and weekly schedules for work assignments; works with supervisors to provide staffing for tournaments and/or special events; adjusts schedules or staffing as needed; approves or denies leave requests; requests/authorizes overtime to ensure adequate staffing at all times. Provides training to new and current employees. Mows and maintains park and open space areas including athletic fields; trim, edge, and weed as required. Plants and maintains lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers. Rakes and cleans City parks and open spaces; removes litter and debris. Drags and lines playing fields; prepares and resets ball fields as needed. Performs duties needed for the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and the pest and weed control of City parks and open spaces. Performs building maintenance duties such as painting, changing air filters, general plumbing repairs, minor electrical work, etc. Opens and closes facilities as needed. Operates tractors, mowers, hand operated equipment and specialized turf care equipment as needed. Performs custodial work such as cleaning floors, cleaning restrooms and replenishing supplies. Maintains irrigation systems and waters fields and public areas as needed. Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs, prepares facilities for park and recreation program use. Responds to emergency and special event clean-ups. Assists with special projects, including construction-related projects, as required. Ensures safety procedures are followed and proper safety equipment is utilized; continually monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and others. Prepares reports and/or completes paperwork as needed; ensures maintenance of records in compliance with city, state, and federal recordkeeping requirements. Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning shop and work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; notifies supervisor of needed repairs. Communicates with supervisor, subordinates, co-workers, vendors, suppliers, citizens, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures, and relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations Knowledge of the techniques, methods, and practices for the application of pesticides and herbicides including knowledge of state and federal regulations Knowledge of the layout of the City parks Knowledge of safety procedure, practices, and equipment Knowledge of lawn care maintenance Knowledge of irrigation systems and parts Skill in supervising others Skill in training others Skill in measuring and setting up sports fields Skill in operating assigned equipment Ability to exercise sound judgment within the scope of responsibility Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, co-workers, supervisors, and the public Must be able to meet regular attendance requirements Must be able to be works nights and weekends Must be able to drive to assigned locations
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED is preferred; three years' grounds or building maintenance experience required including supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Alabama driver license.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical activities required for this position involve: Frequent standing, walking, pushing, pulling, reaching, stooping, crouching, kneeling, climbing, talking, and hearing.
This position requires lifting:
Up to 50 pounds frequently; up to and over 100 pounds occasionally. This position has the following special vision requirements: Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS
The following environmental conditions and hazards may be encountered while working in this position: Extreme heat and cold, outdoor weather conditions, fumes, toxic chemicals, vibration, and loud noise. This position is required to occasionally work in close proximity to moving machinery/equipment and alongside moving traffic on roads.
