The Department

The Parks and Recreation Department's mission is to enhance the quality of life and strengthen the bonds of community by providing an appropriate mix of safe, well-maintained and well-designed parks, open spaces, and community center facilities that are accessible for all residents; provide enriching leisure opportunities for all age groups; and to preserve and protect the City's natural resources, including its urban forest, public open spaces, and landscaped medians and islands.

The Position

The Golf Services Manager oversees all golf course daily functions, activities, operations, maintenance, and staff, while developing and implementing goals, objectives, and standards for the division. This position plans, supervises, leads, and reviews maintenance activities for the golf course and related facilities; administers concessionaire and food and beverage contracts; prepares and administers the division's budget; and plans and implements approved short- and long-term renovations to course grounds and facilities. The Golf Services Manager also administers, maintains, and supports golf operations technology, serves as a liaison with City departments and outside agencies, and stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of golf course management and operations. Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of basic principles and practices of municipal golf course maintenance and administration; methods, materials, equipment, tools, and techniques used in the maintenance and repair of golf course grounds and facilities; contract negotiation and administration, particularly in a public agency setting; employee supervision, including selection, work planning, organization, performance review and evaluation, and employee training and discipline; administration and budget management; knowledge of turf and plant diseases and pests, including appropriate control and eradication measures; accurate record keeping principles and practices; safety principles, practices and equipment related to the work; techniques for effectively interacting and communicating with the public.

Ability to oversee and evaluate work activities to ensure efficient and effective operations; train and develop staff; plan, organize, coordinate, and direct the improvement, maintenance and repair of golf turf and related facilities; analyze, review, and audit business operations and concessionaire agreements to ensure compliance, accountability, and operational effectiveness; read and interpret plans and specifications; prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence, and other written materials; develop and implement effective organizational frameworks, including goals, policies, and accountability measures; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Typical ways to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Four years of administrative and/or supervisory experience in golf course operations and maintenance.

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in horticulture, agronomy, or a field related to the work. Additional experience in golf course management, turf maintenance or a related field may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis.

License and Certificate

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.

Bonus Points (highly desirable)

Experience in turf management and course renovation is desirable.

Possession of any professional certificates in golf maintenance, agronomy or golf management is highly desirable.

Annual Salary:

$ 156,644 - $ 186,763

Comprehensive benefits package including generous paid leave and health benefits

CalPERS retirement 2% 55 for classic members; 2% 62 for new members. Classic employees contribute 8.34% to CalPERS and New members contribute 7.50% to CalPERS

Participation in the Social Security Program

City contribution of 1.5% of base salary to Deferred Compensation, and matching up to 1.0% of the Employee's contribution

The City contributes 0.25% of base salary to a Retiree Health Savings Account
