Job title Assistant Golf Course Superintendent Reports to Golf Course Superintendent Classification Hourly, Full-time, or Part-time, Nonexempt Working Hours As Required Job purpose The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent reports directly to the Golf Course Superintendent. Under the Superintendent's supervision, the Assistant Superintendent directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, and cart paths; supervises the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment; and does related work as required. The assistant superintendent may serve in the superintendent's capacity during his/her absence. Duties and responsibilities Assist the Superintendent in day to day operations of the facility. Supervise, train, and work with seasonal staff to build a solid team environment. Prepare and submit weekly employee schedules to ensure efficient use of employees. Helps monitor the course for disease pressure, moisture issues (both dry and wet), turf decline, and other pests. Must have the ability to make pesticide and fertilizer applications, calibrate equipment, properly document applications, keep an inventory, and the ability to take notes. Irrigation scheduling, repair, and maintenance of a Toro irrigation system with Osmac controllers and Lynx operating system. Knowledge and ability to properly hand-water turf. Attend and participate in weekly department and other periodic employee and member meetings. Conduct weekly facility walk through to ensure the facility is safe and presentable. Operate within all guidelines, policies, standards and constraints as established by Hampton Golf.
Qualifications Qualifications include:
Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways and greens; seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf; planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees; characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; irrigation systems, including wells, pumps, and automatic controls. Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of workers and equipment; prepare clear and concise reports; maintain effective employee and public relations. Possession of a valid driver's license. May require current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator. Working conditions Work is primarily outdoors with some indoor exposure. Potential exposure to sharp and rapid equipment movement, sharp utensils, harmful chemicals and/or being exposed to flying golf balls. Ability to use logical and rational thinking to resolve issues. Ability to perform basic mathematical skills, monitors and develops subordinates, visually monitor the operation areas, write and read member communication. Must have the ability to perform moderate physical work and may be required to lift up to 80 lbs., up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 20 lbs. constantly. Perform activities such as bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, reaching, standing, pushing, lifting and grasping for up to 5 hours without sitting. Please be advised that all work that requires the use of a ladder more than 8 ft. long must be reviewed by Hampton Golfs Club Maintenance person. Following an assessment of the situation, a determination will be made as to whether a maintenance team member or subcontractors will perform the necessary maintenance task. No other staff member is authorized to climb to heights exceeding 8 ft. and/or perform such maintenance. In addition, personnel are prohibited from entering facility attics, walking on the roof of buildings and/or from using scaffolding. Use the following safety precautions when using an 8ft.
ladder:
Correct placement of the ladder. The safest angle for a straight ladder is to ensure it is placed on-fourth the distance from the base to the point of support. A frame ladders naturally comply. Ensure the ladder is placed on a firm level surface, and do not place the ladder near a doorway. Ensure there are non-skid shoes on the ladder. If using a medal ladder, be sure that it is not near electrical wires. One person on a ladder at one time, and ensure another staff member is holding the ladder in position. Never overreach.
