Cemetery Grounds Superintendent Salary:

$21.00 - $26.00 / hour About the Role We are seeking a respectful, skilled, and detail-oriented Cemetery Grounds Superintendent to oversee the complete physical landscape, turf management, and grave site operations. In this critical leadership role, you will direct groundskeeping crews, supervise interments and excavations, maintain historical and modern burial grounds, and ensure our properties remain tranquil, dignified, and immaculate for grieving families and visitors.

Key Responsibilities Interment & Excavation Operations:

Supervise and direct the precise opening and closing of grave sites, vault placements, and marker/monument installations in strict compliance with safety protocols and cemetery mapping.

Crew Leadership & Safety:

Train and manage groundskeeping personnel and heavy equipment operators. Enforce strict safety practices around open excavations and heavy machinery in compliance with OSHA standards. Partner with team and hands on assist to complete tasks.

Equipment & Fleet Maintenance:

Direct the operation, routine maintenance, and repair of backhoes, excavators, commercial mowers, lowering devices, and turf equipment.

Grave Settlement & Restoration:

Oversee soil backfilling, long-term grave settlement restoration, turf re-seeding, and monument leveling to maintain ground stability and site aesthetics.

Records & Map Verification:

Collaborate with administrative staff to verify plot locations, section boundaries, and grave markers against official burial maps before any excavation work begins.

Qualifications Experience:

4+ years of grounds maintenance experience, with at least 2 years supervising teams in cemetery operations, golf courses, parks, or large institutional grounds.

Skills:

Proficient operation of excavators, backhoes, tractors, and commercial grounds care equipment. Strong compassionate communication skills when interacting with grieving visitors or families on-site. Ability to read and interpret complex plot maps and cemetery grid systems.

Certifications & Licenses:

Valid Driver's License required. Heavy Equipment Operation certification or Certified Cemetery Executive (CCE) credential is a plus. Physical Requirements Ability to work outdoors in variable and extreme weather conditions year-round. Ability to lift, carry, or maneuver objects weighing up to 75 lbs. Comfortable working around open ground excavations and operating heavy machinery.
