Job Summary:

The Groundskeeper performs landscaping, grounds maintenance, and related services to maintain safe, clean, attractive, and well-maintained grounds and facilities. This position operates a variety of hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and irrigation systems and performs routine, seasonal, and emergency maintenance as needed.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Collects and disposes of litter and other waste materials. Operates a variety of hand tools, including shovels, rakes, saws, and other landscaping tools. Operates power equipment and vehicles, including tractors, lawn mowers, chainsaws, electric clippers, and other similar equipment. Waters and maintains lawns, trees, shrubs, and other plants using sprinkler systems, hoses, watering cans, and irrigation systems. Trims trees and vegetation and maintains flower beds. Maintains sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, path lighting, and other grounds features; performs general cleaning as needed. Plans, cultivates, and maintains lawns, turf, gardens, and landscaped areas and, based on landscaping designs, identifies additional work that should be performed. Delivers and spreads topsoil and/or sand over newly seeded areas. Prepares and applies fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, and other landscaping chemicals in accordance with product directions and applicable safety procedures. Where artificial turf is used, periodically replaces cushion pads and vacuums and disinfects turf after use. Performs regular and seasonal maintenance of irrigation systems including necessary winterization procedures. Installs and maintains specialty landscape features such as rock gardens and retaining/block walls. Responds to emergency calls as required. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

Good verbal communication skills. Basic understanding of groundskeeping and landscaping practices and procedures. Thorough understanding of the care and maintenance of various types of lawns, greenery, shrubs, trees, and plants. Ability to work efficiently, thoroughly, and independently. Ability to follow directions, safety procedures, and established work practices. Ability to operate various types of power equipment, including lawn mowers, trimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, chainsaws, and other landscaping equipment. Ability to safely and effectively use hand tools required for landscaping and grounds maintenance. Ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely and satisfactory manner.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Related groundskeeping, landscaping, or maintenance experience preferred. On-the-job training provided.

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of standing and walking, as well as frequent stretching, bending, climbing, kneeling, pulling, and other physical activities. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds at a time. Must be physically capable of safely operating power equipment and performing routine grounds maintenance tasks. Must be able to work outdoors for extended periods in a variety of weather conditions.

Schedule:

Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM On-call availability for emergency situations as required.
