Job Description

Under the direction of a lead or supervisor, employees in this classification perform a variety of grounds and other maintenance duties for DAPER facilities, requiring experience and familiarity with applicable sports regulations, safety requirements, etc. Employees are expected to act independently to apply knowledge of sports activities to properly set up for events, etc. Work may be reviewed during progress and/or upon completion.
Core Duties :
Perform a variety of general grounds maintenance to include equipment repair, irrigation head replacement, field setup and layout. Prepare outdoor facilities for events, games, and practices by mowing, leveling, raking, and marking fields or courts, installing practice or game equipment, goals, posts, yard markers, bases, beach volleyball nets, etc. Check the condition of grounds and playing areas, and take steps to correct unsatisfactory conditions or reports findings to supervisor. Clean and maintain outdoor playing surfaces such as concrete, grass, synthetic turf, and dirt surfaces. Perform minor plumbing and electrical work, clean and repair sprinkler heads, sharpen mower blades, perform rough carpentry and painting. Operate a variety of mobile and non-mobile equipment to mow, spray, trim, rake, level, clean, vacuum, aerate, roll, etc. Water, weed, seed, and trim plants and trees, seed play area. Perform laboring duties such as moving sports or other equipment by hand, removing leaves and rubbish from playing areas, etc. May act as a coordinator or ground crews on an occasional basis. Operate equipment for performing cultural practices to grass fields including tractors, aerators, slicers, verticutters. and topdressers. Repair, prepare and groom all field areas that contain sand, dirt, and/or clay. Clean and maintain all equipment to satisfactory operating conditions. Adhere to safety rules. Minimum Education and Experience Usually requires one year of Physical Education grounds experience or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Ability to work outside in all types of outside weather conditions. Ability to withstand extensive standing, walking, pushing and pulling. Ability to follow job related instructions. Ability to operate tractors with attachments and mobile and non mobile mowing equipment. Knowledge of applicable sports regulations, safety procedures, and general practice involved in preparing facilities for sports events. Ability to use hand tools to perform a variety of minor repairs, including hand powered blowers, edger, etc. Certificates and Licenses Required Valid California non-commercial class C driver's license.
