Job Description
Title Equipment Operator, Class A CDL Location City of Griffin Description The individual in this position will use and maintain a variety of equipment that requires a Class "A" CDL license for the extra heavy-duty nature of the jobs that will be performed for construction and maintenance activities associated with City properties, streets, right of ways, storm water systems, water and waste-water systems, and/or landscape and concrete operations.
Essential duties include:
Operates a variety of standard heavy equipment including, but not limited to: vehicles, aerial and boom slope mowers, articulating bucket lifts, clam and bucket trucks, trencher, dump trucks, articulated loader, rubber tire tractor/loader, trailer, bulldozer, backhoe loader, mini-excavators, highway truck, street-sweeper, asphalt roller, sewer vacuum truck, and skid steer loader. Performs pre-trip and daily inspections to assigned equipment or vehicle; checks brakes, lights, belts, hoses, fluid levels, air pressure, etc., reports equipment or vehicle service, maintenance, or repair needs to immediate supervisor. Records inspections and routine service log. Performs maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment in good clean working condition including, but not limited to: greasing, maintaining fluid levels, changing blades, tires, oil, filters, hoses, and nozzles; ensures necessary repairs are made. Loads and hauls gravel, debris, and other materials onto various trucks and haulers to and from job sites. Performs job site safety procedures to ensure and maintain a safe work space at all times. Assists with maintenance of safety equipment (i.e., atmospheric gas detector calibrations, maintenance/repair of fall arrest equipment, maintenance/repair of forced ventilation blowers.) Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment, fuels as needed; assists in cleaning vehicles and other equipment. Performs job site safety procedures to set up and maintain safe work space at all times. Performs related job duties as assigned. Performs job duties of the Equipment Operator, Class B CDL as warranted. Minimum hourly rate of pay $20.10 including competitive benefits package and generous pension plan.
Additional Department Specific Duties include:
Street:
Forms and finishes concrete. Lays asphalt. Plants trees, grass, shrubs and flowers in landscaped areas. Blows leaves from sidewalks, parking lots and sidewalks. Trims and removes limbs and debris. Empties trash containers and picks up trash. Applies pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Clears ditches along roadways. Trims, prunes and removes trees. Installs and performs maintenance on sidewalks. Pulls ditches, and cuts or removes debris. May temporarily function as a Crew-leader as warranted.
Stormwater:
Uses mini excavators, skid steers, backhoes, rubber tire loaders, dozers, loaders, farm tractors, and boom slope mowers for maintenance and construction of the stormwater system. Cleans storm drains and catch basins. Weed eats ditches and retention ponds. Installs and repairs drain pipes. Repairs and replaces damaged storm drain lines and surrounding areas including removal and replacement of fences, landscaping, etc., Pours and finishes concrete. Clears blockages in stormwater conveyances. May temporarily function as job supervisor as warranted.
Solid Waste/Collections:
Operates either a side-loading automated truck, rear-loader, roll-off, or front-loading truck along a pre-determined route to collect residential or commercial refuse. Takes waste to landfill or transfer station and deposits materials accordingly. Operates a two-way radio Assists with training new drivers. Collects refuse at the back of houses for mobility impaired and paid-for customers. Inspects dumpsters for unacceptable solid waste.
Solid Waste/Transfer Station:
Operates a rubber tire loader to load trailers with solid waste. Operates a tractor-trailer to transport solid waste to landfill; unloads waste, cleans trailer, and returns to transfer station. Maintains transfer station building and grounds; picks up litter; cleans break room and office area. Operates a computerized truck scale. Removes recyclable items from solid waste before loading. Collects fees and issues receipts.
Water Distribution/Wastewater Collections:
Repairs water leaks in main lines and sewer lines which require the ability to locate the issue. Flushes water lines and fire hydrants; checks water pressure. Installs water meters. Changes cut-offs. Assists with excavation projects. Leads the crew and participates in the repair of excavation sites. Position Requirements Employee must have the visual ability to observe and detect dangerous obstacles, other vehicles or equipment, and pedestrians. The employee may be exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, dust, dirt, grease and irritating chemicals; therefore, the use of provided protective devices such as hard hat, safety glasses, safety-toe boots, hearing protection, gloves, safety vest, etc., is required. The work is typically performed while mostly sitting or driving; however, bending, crouching, stooping, standing and walking are frequent. The work involves frequent pushing, pulling, manipulating, and/or lifting or carrying loads or objects of up to 75 pounds routinely and up to 100 pounds unassisted. Climbing steep slopes and ladders, and using tools or equipment that requires a high degree of dexterity. The work will be performed in all forms of weather that may be very hot, cold, extreme or inclement. Work may be performed in the presence of citizens and have traffic which may contribute to the complexity of the position. High school diploma or GED. Must be able to effectively communicate with others. Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision. Minimum 18 months of experience operating stated equipment. Possession of a valid State of Georgia Class "A" commercial driver's license, acceptable driving history, and the ability to drive a vehicle as needed. Possession of valid MUTCD Flagging Certification, or obtainment of within one year of role for public works, stormwater, and water-wastewater positions. Possession of valid Soil and Erosion Certification Level 1A, or obtainment within one year of role for stormwater positions. Possession of Trench Excavation and Trenching Awareness Certification, or obtainment within one year of role for water-wastewater positions. Employee may be required to be on scheduled "stand-by." Stand-by is the time an employee shall be available after completing his or her regular work shift, to include weekends and holidays, in which the employee is required to be available for call back to return to work in case of emergency or need. Stand by and call back are both compensable. Though infrequent, in the case of an extreme event or emergency maintenance, employee will be required to report to report back to work. This may be after regular working hours to include nights, weekends and holidays.
