Jobs › Great Barrington, MA › Building and Grounds Crew Leader/L… Town of Great Barrington Building and Grounds Crew Leader/Laborer Great Barrington, MA Apply Position Purpose In support of the Town of Great Barrington\'s mission to serve the community with integrity, accountability, and excellence in public service, the Buildings and Grounds Crew Leader/Laborer plays a critical role in maintaining safe, reliable, and resilient public infrastructure. This position assists Public Works leadership in developing plans, delegating, and executing priorities. The Crew Leader/Laborer is responsible for performing a wide range of skilled and manual tasks related to building cleaning and routine maintenance, grounds keeping, mowing, carpentry, painting, and equipment maintenance. The Crew Leader/Laborer directly contributes to public safety and community well-being by ensuring that Town facilities are properly cared for and remain accessible to all Town staff, residents, and visitors. This role requires responsibility, dependability, teamwork, and a strong commitment to service. The work performed has a visible and lasting impact, and supports the Town\'s goal of maintaining accessible, safe, and well? maintained public spaces for all.
Supervision Reports to:
Highway/Facilities Superintendent, Working Foreman, and/orDPW Superintendent Supervises:
Buildings and Grounds crew members Works independently or as part of a crew to complete assigned tasks. Essential Duties and Responsibilities (The functions or duties listed below are intended as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.)- Leads Buildings and Grounds crew in their daily activities, ensures high workmanship standards are maintained.
- Oversees training of laborer roles, provides guidance and mentorship, and facilitates professional development.
- Conducts regular building cleanings and maintenance, including painting and carpentry work
- Performs routine checks on building infrastructure and equipment; reports and facilitates needed repairs.
- Performs manual labor in connections with grounds keeping, including mowing and trimming.
- Participates in snow and ice removal as needed, including shoveling, plowing, sanding, and salting.
- Maintains work areas in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
- Responds to emergency situations such as storms, flooding, or road hazards.
- Performs other related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Knowledge of building and grounds maintenance, and the safe operation of equipment and tools.
- Valid (2A) Hoisting license.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor under varying weather conditions.
- Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions, work cooperatively, and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors. Preferred Qualification
- Class B Commercial Driver\'s License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Commitment to environmental stewardship and compliance. Work Environment and Phyiscal Requirements
- Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, and traffic hazards.
- Operates a variety of motor vehicles, and power tools.
- Interacts with the public on occasion, requiring courtesy and professionalism.
