Job Description
Objective:
This course uses the physical act of nurturing plants to help students cultivate a growth mindset, overcome personal obstacles, and succeed in furthering their education. By exploring how seeds face resistance, adapt, and eventually flourish in the unique environment of New Mexico, students will discover powerful metaphors for their own life and academic journey. As the instructor of this class, you will be blending personal narrative writing assignments with gardening tasks in our new greenhouse and community garden space. Teaching this class will need a unique teacher who can draw on their creative writing skills, English Language Arts knowledge, science skills (photosynthesis, soil testing, botany), and gardening skills (maybe you are even a Master Gardener?). In coordination with the Education Coordinator, this instructor facilitates lessons using Saranam curriculum and maintains a safe learning environment supportive of adult student educational progress during the second semester of Saranam educational programming. The instructor will collaborate with staff, volunteers, and other instructors to support student needs.Status:
This is a contract position for late August 2026 through December 2026 , with the possibility of further assignments on a per semester basis. Saranam observes the APS holiday schedule.Essential Functions:
1. Lead the Saranam class using provided lesson plans on Thurdays from 8:30-11:30 pm on the ADC Family Campus. 2. Maintain a safe and secure learning environment that supports learning and relationship building. 3. Assess individual student progress in coordination with the Education Coordinator. 4. Communicate effectively with Saranam clients and staff. 5. Participate in instructor meetings. 6. Manage classroom behavior according to Saranam guidelines and rubric. 7. Promote development and effective application of critical thinking, communication, self-reflection, problem-solving, and decision-making.Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution.
- Experience with different teaching/tutoring strategies, including discussion, collaborative learning, differentiated instruction, and experiential learning.
- Experience leading/facilitating discussions and/or teaching classes.
- Experience working with a nontraditional and diverse population.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries.
- Ability to use MS Office, familiarity with Windows.
